Due to the volume and quality of the applications received, the University of California Education Abroad Program has created additional awards for the Jasmine Jahanshahi Scholarship, making a total of $21,500 available to UC students on semester or year-long immersion programs.

Santa Barbara, CA (August 2011) — The University of California Education Abroad Program(UCEAP) recently announced the recipients for the inaugural Jasmine Jahanshahi Scholarship Award, which is offered to students planning to attend UCEAP semester- or year-long immersion programs in the 2011-2012 academic year.

“We are honored to announce the recipients of the inaugural Jasmine Jahanshahi Scholarship Award, which was established to honor the memory of the stellar UC Berkeley student whose personal philosophies on study abroad highlighted the importance of making a strong commitment to international issues and fostering deeper global connections,” said Jean-Xavier Guinard, Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director of UCEAP.

Due to a high volume of quality applications, Guinard has determined that for the inaugural year of the Jasmine Jahanshahi Scholarship, UCEAP will offer additional awards making a total of $21,500 available to UCEAP students on semester- or year-long immersion programs. In addition to the two study abroad scholarship awards in the stated amount of $2,500, UCEAP is also awarding an additional 17 scholarships ($16,500) in varying amounts.

“We were pleased to see the extraordinary response to this first call, including many applications documenting high academic achievement and a strong commitment to global issues,” says Guinard. “This is the standard of excellence, global awareness and engagement that Jasmine Jahanshahi exemplified.”

As Jasmine Jahanshahi said: “To truly understand a country—its social tensions, linguistic subtleties, culture—one must have a firsthand account; one must spend a significant amount of time in the country.”
