UC Education Abroad Program Announces 2011 Photo Contest Winners
DATE: 11/4/2011

Winners from UCLA, UC Santa Barbara and UC Berkeley were selected from entries submitted by students across the UC system from programs around the world.

Santa Barbara, CA (November 2011) — The University of California Education Abroad Program (UCEAP) recently announced the winners of the 2011 Study Abroad Photo Contest. Students, faculty, and staff from across 9 UC campuses voted for winners in each of three categories:

1) Tells a Story (photo)
2) Landscape & Cityscape (photo)
3) Unique Experiences Abroad (video)

The winning contestants will each receive a $200 Apple Store gift certificate and will be featured on the UCEAP website and Flickr page.

“We congratulate our winners, and also want to thank all the students who participated, shared their personal stories, and showed how international education can help people form deeper connections to valuable and unique cultural experiences,” says Jean-Xavier Guinard, Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director of UCEAP. “This contest is a great opportunity for the UC community to see how the study abroad experience has helped students become international citizens and global thinkers by informing new and diverse perspectives.”

This spring, all UCEAP participants including Reciprocal Exchange students were invited to share photos and videos sharing their unique experiences abroad. UCEAP received a variety of beautiful and compelling photos and videos from all over the world, including Thailand, Brazil, Italy, New Zealand, and more! Finalists will be showcased by UCEAP to promote study abroad programs and international education activities.

Thai Grandmother by Kristy Kumar, UC Berkeley
In the middle of a temple, this beautiful lady stopped me with her arm and asked me my name in Thai. I saw that she was with her son, his wife, and their many children. Each of them was looking after her. They even found this chair, and stick out of nowhere to support her. I think this epitomized the importance of giving back to one's elders in Thai culture.
