UCEAP Announces $1 Million Scholarship Initiative for Study Abroad in 2013-14DATE: 1/14/2013
UCEAP to provide increased funding for scholarships in the 2013-14 academic year to further its commitment to the international education of UC students.
Santa Barbara, CA (January 2013) — The University of California Education Abroad Program (UCEAP) has announced that it will be doubling scholarship funding to $1 million in 2013-14. In line with a vision of study abroad for all, academic excellence and best business practices, UCEAP’s $1 Million Scholarship initiative will expand study abroad opportunities for UC students from all backgrounds and academic disciplines. UCEAP will be awarding scholarships directly to students of all majors and programs as well as returning students who are selected to be Student Ambassadors. Additional funding will also be allocated directly through UC campus study abroad offices.
“This increased funding will provide immediate and tangible benefits to several hundred UC students. There is no better way to show our commitment to a vision of ‘study abroad for all’ than to provide scholarship opportunities that help as many UC students go abroad as possible,” says Jean-Xavier Guinard, Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director of UCEAP. “We recognize the financial obstacles brought about by the current state of the economy and the rising cost of higher education, and we remain dedicated to providing funding to UC students who face these financial realities.”
While the cost of UCEAP participation remains competitive with that of non-UC study abroad programs and, in many locations, is comparable to the cost of study on a UC campus, the need for financial aid and scholarship opportunities remains critical to student participation in study abroad.
Research shows that students who participate in study abroad programs graduate faster and enjoy more career benefits and opportunities. Students also frequently cite their overall study abroad experience as the highlight of their UC education.
“As a leader and innovator in study abroad for over 50 years, UCEAP is committed to providing access to scholarships as well as diverse programs that allow UC students to earn UC credit and grades towards their degrees,” says Guinard. In 2011-12, exclusive UCEAP study abroad scholarships totaled over $300,000. UCEAP scholarships for the 2012-13 academic year were increased to some $700,000. Applications for the $1 Million Scholarship Initiative in this current year will be made available in mid-February.
