/ Study Abroad in China
Overview Take advantage of this summer language and culture program held at East China Normal University (ECNU) in Shanghai.
During the program students attend classes with UC and other international students. Outside of class, you will benefit from using Chinese during program excursions, cultural activities, and daily interactions with locals in Shanghai. For those interested in continuing on with the study of China and Chinese language, explore other EAP options that begin in the fall at Fudan University, Beijing Normal University, or Peking University.
ECNU, one of China’s oldest and most reputable universities, is located in the southwest area of the city on an expansive green campus divided by a quiet, tree-lined canal. The university has a modern infrastructure with excellent facilities and a wide variety of clubs and activities.

Course Opportunities
Course Opportunities This program focuses on elementary to advanced written and conversational Chinese language study. Chinese tutors provide individual or group tutoring to supplement classroom instruction.
In addition, cultural activities and program excursions are planned to enhance your understanding of Chinese history and culture.

You may also apply for the fall International Studies, Joint UC-Fudan Univ. (JPIS) program by completing a separate application. Housing
Housing You can live on or off campus in a foreign student dormitory or apartment in a single or double room shared with other UC students. You may choose to share a room with a local Chinese student, but you must pay the cost of the room.
On-site Support
On-Site Support EAP students are supported by UC’s network of EAP offices at every UC campus and partnerships with EAP host universities throughout the world. UC faculty and local staff abroad will help you integrate into Chinese culture and provide assistance with academics, housing, safety, and other issues.

In the southwest region of Shanghai, East China Normal University (ECNU) hosts the EAP summer Chinese Language & Culture program. Known as a “garden university” for its beautiful campuses and buildings in both European and traditional Chinese styles, ECNU is home to a top-rated program for teaching Chinese as a second language.
Founded in 1951 on the site of Great China University, ECNU has a modern infrastructure with excellent sports facilities, a library with 3.5 million volumes, student cafeterias and cafés, and residence halls.

EstimatedCost Participation in UCEAP is a great value! The cost of studying abroad on UCEAP programs is typically less than that of non-UC study abroad programs. The dollar figures listed in the chart represent: 1) the amount of the fees that are paid directly to UCEAP in the current year, and 2) an estimate of the amount needed to cover personal living expenses in this location. Personal travel and entertainment are not included here.
Don't forget that you take your financial aid with you and the amount of your financial aid package will take into account the estimated TOTAL COST of this experience, as it is estimated below.
These expenses are estimated for 2012-13. Amounts will vary for 2012-13 participation due to potential changes to UC fees, exchange rate fluctuation, etc. Non-Resident Fees apply: If you are subject to out-of-state tuition at your UC campus, you will pay the same fees on UCEAP. For a more detailed breakdown of 2012-13 payment information, visit the Participants Portal and select the appropriate program.

Application RequirementsClass Level: Sophomore, Junior, Senior, Graduate Class Level Eligibility: Graduate students may participate for language study only, not research. Language Prerequisites:Chinese - The University-level language requirement is: minimum 2 quarters / 1 semester with a minimum language GPA of 3.00. * Simplified Chinese characters. GPA: 2.50 cumulative GPA at the time of application and maintained through the end of the last term prior to departure. GPA Note: Graduate students are required to have a 3.0 GPA. Other Eligibility Requirements: Successful completion of a course on China is highly recommended.
Minimum Criteria: All applicants must also have: - Serious academic goals and a clear plan for integrating EAP studies into the student's UC degree program
- Social and cross-cultural sensitivity; maturity; ability to adapt successfully to a different environment and an new education system; ability to assess and exhibit appropriate behavior in a variety of situations
- A willingness to abide by program regulations
- An endorsement by the Campus EAP Selection Committee and completion of all campus-specific requirements (an interview may be required)
Deadlines

Supplemental predeparture materials will be required for many programs, including, but not limited to, host institution applications, visa and housing applications, medical clearances, etc.
