The UCEAP summer Pre-Intensive Language Program (pre-ILP) in Paris is designed to fulfill language requirements for students enrolled in programs for the fall or year at the University of Lyon
or the University of Bordeaux
. To participate in the pre-ILP you must have 4-5 quarters or 3 semesters of university-level French.
The program is taught by faculty who specialize in teaching French using curricula designed to correspond to UC French departments. The language instruction and cultural education take full advantage of the local surroundings and put you in direct contact with French society.
All students enrolled in the pre-ILP plus fall semester programs in Bordeaux or Lyon will receive a $2,000 scholarship! No application is required. You must complete the program in full to retain the scholarship.
Studying French language is the focus of the program. You will submit a language assessment prior to departure to determine your level of language proficiency and then be assigned to one of the following French language sequences. 10 quarter/6.6 semester UC units. (Syllabi for language courses

You will also take an upper-division pre-ILP practicum course (3 quarter/2 semester UC units)designed to provide you with techniques to study effectively and efficiently in the French academic environment. The course will prepare you for written and oral exams in French that test your comprehension of university classes and lectures. You will also cover effective note-taking, problem-solving, and research skills; how to communicate appropriately with peers and instructors; and how to deal with the practical aspects of daily life in France.
You are required to take a full-time course of study while abroad. 13 quarter/8.6 semester UC units are required; three courses.
Students have an option to reduce the number of units for the pre-ILP program if they are approaching the unit cap on their UC campus.
Language of Instruction
All language course work must be taken for a letter grade.

Summer Pre-ILP: mid-June through early August
You can choose to live in a homestay with a French family or in a shared apartment with UC students. Housing is organized by ACCENT (International Consortium for Academic Programs Abroad).
UCEAP students are supported by UC’s network of study abroad offices at every UC campus and partnerships with UCEAP host universities throughout the world. In Paris, UCEAP partners with ACCENT International and their local staff help integrate you into the culture and provide assistance with housing, safety, and other issues. The UCEAP Study Center in Paris provides additional support and supervises your academic program.
Four to five quarters/three semesters of university-level French is required. Students with 6 quarters/4 semesters or more of university-level French are ineligible for the Pre-ILP.
