The UCEAP summer Pre-Intensive Language Program (pre-ILP) in Florence is designed to fulfill language requirements for students enrolled in programs for the fall or year at the University of Bologna
. To participate in the pre-ILP, you must have at least one year of university-level Italian.
The program is taught by faculty who specialize in teaching Italian using curricula designed to correspond to UC Italian departments. The language instruction and cultural education take full advantage of the local surroundings and put you in direct contact with Italian society.
All participants in the pre-ILP plus fall semester program in Bologna will receive a $2,000 scholarship! No application is required. You must complete the program in full to retain the scholarship.
Studying Italian language is the focus of the program. You will take a placement exam upon arrival to determine your level of language proficiency and then be assigned to one of the following Italian language sequences. 10 quarter/6.6 semester UC units. - Intermediate Italian 16 & Advanced Italian 101
You will also take an upper-division pre-ILP practicum course
(3 quarter/2 semester UC units) designed to provide the necessary learning techniques and skills for successfully functioning within the Italian academic environment.
You are required to take a full-time course of study while abroad. 13 quarter/8.6 semester UC units are required; three courses.
Students have an option to reduce the number of units for the pre-ILP program if they are approaching the unit cap on their UC campus.
Language of Instruction
Italian- All language course work must be taken for a letter grade.

Summer Pre-ILP: mid–June through early August
You can choose to live in a shared apartment with other UC students or in a homestay with an Italian family. Housing is arranged by ACCENT, an international education organization partnered with UCEAP.
UCEAP students are supported by UC’s network of EAP offices at every UC campus and partnerships with UCEAP host universities throughout the world. UC faculty and local staff abroad help students integrate into the culture of Italy and provide assistance with academics, housing, safety, and other issues.
A minimum of 3 quarters/2 semesters and a maximum of 5 quarters/3 semesters of university-level Italian.
