Univ. of Padova
UCEAP offers you the opportunity to study at the University of Padova, where Galileo taught and Copernicus studied. A centuries-old college town with a friendly local community, Padova is a great location to engage in Italian culture. The city boasts beautiful outdoor piazzas, churches, frescoes by Giotto, museums, and charming gardens. It is often called a “café without doors,” and offers a rich and stimulating social life. Just a short train ride from Venice, Padova makes an excellent base for exploring the rest of Italy.
You can take regular university courses with Italian and international students in most academic disciplines.

If you only have one year of university-level Italian you can qualify for this program by enrolling in the summer Pre-Intensive Language Program (pre-ILP), Florence.
Students attend classes with host country students.

Course Opportunities

Courses are available in such disciplines as agriculture and forestry (including enology), art history, business administration, chemistry, communications, dramatic arts and music, education, history, journalism, linguistics, literature, mathematics, political science, psychology, selected pre-med courses (including biology), and physiology.

Use the following resources to learn about courses on EAP:

  • EAP Program Search provides information on general areas of study.
  • Host institution online catalogs or course listings:
  • MyEAP Course Catalog lists courses previously taken by UC students. Additional courses may be available and not all courses may still be offered. Since courses in new programs have not yet been taken for credit, they may not appear in the MyEAP Course Catalog.

You will take a full-time course of study on EAP. The average course load is three to four courses per term.

Pre-ILP: 3 to 15 UC quarter units
ILP: 3 to 6 UC quarter units (upper division)
Term: Students take a minimum 18 UC quarter units per semester and 36 units per year

Language of Instruction

Italian

Language Study

Italian
The program begins with a four-week Italian intensive language program (ILP) to help you develop your writing, grammar, and conversation skills and prepare you for taking Italian university courses. Additional Italian language study may be required during the year.

Internships, Research, and Independent Study

Host Institutions

University of Padova

University of Padova
Founded in 1222, the University of Padova is currently ranked the number one institution of higher education in Italy. Padova (also called Padua) is a centrally located city which once boasted residents such as Dante and Petrarch. Artistic masterpieces are scattered throughout the city, including the Scrovegni Chapel, Giotto’s frescoes, and Donatello’s equestrian statute. Furthermore, Padova’s proximity to Venice makes it a commercial-yet-highly-cultural city of art, music, and history.

The University of Padova, being almost eight hundred years old, has gained fame from some of its former students and faculty. For example, Galileo Galilei was a professor of mathematics for 18 years. Another claim-to-fame that Padova holds dear is that the first female to ever graduate from a European university, Elena Lucrezia Corner, completed her university degree at Padova in 1678.

The earliest students of Padova studied only law and theology, but today, students can enroll in courses in many subjects, including Agricultural Sciences, Arts and Philosophy, Education, Engineering, Law, Sciences, Pharmacy, Political Sciences, Psychology, Statistical Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Medicine, Economics, and Business Administration. Sample courses available for UC students in the above areas include engaging topics such as Personal Finance, Environmental Engineering, Banking Law, Population Genetics, Transnational Commercial Law, Neuropsychology of Aging, Large Animal Husbandry, and Economics of Information.

With a city so immersed in art and culture, it is only natural that the University of Padova be affiliated with many museums and gardens. The university’s botanical garden is over 450 years old, and museums such as the Zoological Museum and the Museum of Astronomy’s Instruments act as other institutions for facilitating research and learning.

Students also have access to many student associations to help ease the assimilation process. Erasmus Padua, founded in 1992, helps to create social and cultural events for study abroad students, events which include ski trips, evening pub parties, and day trips to close-by Italian cities. Specific artistic groups also help build connections and friendships, such as those found at the art, music, and theatre centers.
