Intensive Arabic, Rabat

Study Abroad Program Overview

UCEAP has partnered with AMIDEAST to offer this unique program of Intensive Arabic Study. The program is comprised of two 4-week sessions, making it possible for you to move through two levels in one summer.

Students are picked up at the airport by an AMIDEAST representative and taken to their host family. Orientation sessions begin the following day at the AMIDEAST Center and include information about safety, academics, local and emergency contacts, and issues of cultural adjustment.

All classes are held in AMIDEAST’s Center in Rabat, which is tucked away in Rabat’s Agdal district and close to coffee shops, fast food restaurants, cafés, and shopping.  The AMIDEAST Center is a large facility with modern classrooms, Wi-Fi access, and a lounge space for education abroad students. The AMIDEAST Center in Rabat also has computers reserved for student use. (AMIDEAST recommends that students bring a laptop). AMIDEAST teachers are native speakers with excellent teaching experience and skill.

Classes will meet 5 hours a day/5 days a week for eight weeks. Each four-week session includes 100 hours of instruction in Modern Standard Arabic and Moroccan colloquial. Modern Standard Arabic meets for 4 hours a day and Moroccan Arabic for 1 hour a day. You will enroll in both Modern Standard Arabic and Colloquial Moroccan Arabic (Darija) at a level appropriate to your proficiency. Placement tests to determine your level of proficiency will be administered prior to your arrival; you will be notified of your assigned level when you arrive.

As the AMIDEAST Center also serves the community, offering English classes and several other educational, training, and mentoring activities, you will find ample opportunity to meet and speak with Moroccans. Quite often, locals attending classes in the Center have studied abroad and welcome the chance to talk about their experiences.

Scholarships are available for this program! See the Cost page for details.

Internships, Research, and Independent Study

Participation in UCEAP is a great value! The cost of studying abroad on UCEAP programs is typically less than that of non-UC study abroad programs. The dollar figures listed in the chart below represent an estimate of: 1) the UCEAP fees for the current year, and 2) the additional amount needed to cover your living expenses in this location. Estimates for personal travel, entertainment and Non-Resident (out of state) Fees are not included.
Keep in mind that on UCEAP you take your financial aid with you. The amount of your financial aid package will take into account the total estimated costs of this experience. One advantage of selecting UCEAP for study abroad is that we facilitate the process by working with your UC Financial Aid Office (FAO), informing them of your UCEAP participation and providing them with your UCEAP budget. Just like your UC Campus billing office, we receive your financial aid and scholarships from your FAO, apply it to cover the UCEAP program fees, and disburse any remaining aid on a set schedule.
