Host Institutions

University College Maastricht

University College, Maastricht
Maastricht University is one of the most international universities in the world, and the number one international university in the Netherlands. Situated on the river Maas in Limburg, the southernmost province in the Netherlands, Maastricht University is located in a cultural hub of the country, with music, art, theatre, dance, and literary events occurring almost daily. Maastricht University is also highly sustainable, working with the Maastricht University Green Office in order to create a very eco-friendly campus. Because of its central location, UM is strongly influenced by its surrounding countries, including Germany, France, and Belgium, and these countries are easily accessible by train.

UM adopts a unique approach to education and uses “Problem Based Learning” in many of its courses. Furthermore, Maastricht University has a distinctive focus on multidisciplinary teams in research, with many different departments working together on specialized projects. This multidisciplinary approach is also evident in the close cooperation between the university and many international institutes, businesses, and industries. Although UM is a relatively young university (founded in 1976), it has quickly grown to an international heart of education, and boasts an astounding 43% international population. Because of this, many events for international students are held at the university, helping students feel more comfortable and facilitating international relationships.

University College Maastricht, a small liberal arts college, is a highly sought-after educational institution both for natives of the Netherlands and for international students. Located in an old convent built in 1492, UCM is based on a unique focus on broad knowledge and intellectual flexibility, meaning that students at UCM create their own expansive curriculum to facilitate a more well-rounded degree. Students can take courses in sociology while studying media or biology at the same time. With over 120 courses of study to choose from, students are exposed to many different subjects and interests, all tailor-made for their degree by themselves. Some example courses include Classical Sociology, Human Rights, Narrative Media, Totalitarian Temptation, and Medical Microbiology.
