Study Abroad Program Overview

Program Currently Suspended

Due to safety and security concerns, the programs at Koç University are currently suspended for fall, spring, and year, 2017-18.
UCEAP's dedicated emergency management team monitors events 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For updates and situation reports on Turkey, see our Worldwide Alerts Page.
UCEAP students are fully integrated with Turkish and other international students into Koç University classes and have access to all fields of instruction.  Koç University was founded with the goal of creating a center of excellence in higher education and research. Courses are in English, but students are able to increase their ability to interact socially with Turkish students outside of classes by studying Turkish.
Academic highlights include:
  • Opportunities to study the archaeology of Anatolia, the Ancient Near East, and the Mediterranean, and art from the Early Christian and Byzantine period to the 20th century through courses offered in the Department of Archaeology and History of Art; practical work complements lectures and students have the opportunity to participate in excavations
  • Courses relating to current political and security issues in the Middle East, the Balkans, and the Central Asian Republics for students in international relations and political science
  • Beginning Turkish for study abroad students with little or no prior study of the language; a course in Turkish culture and literature is available for students with an intermediate knowledge of Turkish
Orientation at Koc University: Planned by the International Center, the orientation period is full of activity, with workshops, tours, a "survival" Turkish language class, and information on how to register your courses with both the host university and UC, to make sure you receive UC credit for courses taken abroad. Participation in all sessions and events is mandatory.
Students attend classes with international and/or host country students.

Language of Instruction

Language Study

Fall :
mid-September to mid-January*

Spring :
end of January to early June

Year :
mid-September to early June

*The International Office may be able to help you make arrangements with each professor to take early exams so you can depart in December. Each professor has the right to allow or not allow early exams.

Extension is possible from the fall to the year

You are responsible to reserve and pay for your own housing, either on- or off-campus, directly to the housing provider.  Payment for all on-campus housing must be made within one week of moving in. There is a 15-day period after arrival to make room changes if space is available.

Koç University guarantees campus housing to incoming exchange students. Assignments are usually to a double room with a Turkish roommate. Each dormitory floor has a Resident Assistant.

Although dormitories offer the convenience of proximity and a place to interact with Turkish students, you should be aware of strict regulations that differentiate Turkish dorms from the typical U.S. dorm. Although there is no curfew for residents, visiting hours are restricted and all visitors are limited to the dorm’s common area. In addition, smoking and drinking (and any empty alcohol containers) are prohibited in the dorms.

Extracurricular Activities

Koç University sports facilities include a fitness center, tennis and basketball courts, soccer fields, a swimming pool, and an indoor ice rink. Students participate in a number of clubs, not only dedicated to sports but also including academic groups focusing on art, languages, investment, Turkish music, and many others.

On-site Support

  • UCEAP students are supported by UC’s network of EAP offices at every UC campus and partnerships with UCEAP host universities throughout the world. Local staff abroad will help you integrate into Turkish culture and provide assistance with academics, housing, safety, and other issues.

"The exchange office at Koç University was extremely helpful in just about every aspect. The exchange office also planned some great events and some great weekends in different parts of Turkey."  - 2011-2012 program participant
See the EAP Program Guide for program-specific details about host institutions, program structure, and courses; academic culture and conduct; internships, research, & independent study; units, exams, and grades; orientation; housing; and information about the intensive language program (if applicable).

Course Opportunities

Regular university courses are available in a wide variety of disciplines in the social sciences and humanities. Archaeology, art history, business, economics, engineering, comparative literature, and media studies are particularly strong.

A number of graduate-level courses are open to UCEAP students even though prerequisites have not been met. You are encouraged to apply; for example, the Graduate School of Business is one of the strongest business schools in the world.

Depending on student demand, Koç University will set up classes for Arabic language study taught by professors or Ph.D. students.  A minimum of 8-10 students is required.

Use the following resources to learn about courses on EAP:
  • Host institution online catalogs or course listings:
  • MyEAP Course Catalog lists Koç University courses previously taken by UC students. Many additional courses are available, and not all courses may still be offered.

You are required to take a full-time course of study while abroad; 22.5 quarter/15 semester UC units per semester, usually five courses, including a required Turkish language course.

Research and Independent Study

Research and Independent study for academic credit are possible in this program. Arrangements are generally made at the Study Center after arrival at the host institution.  Pre-departure preparation may be required. If you are interested in a research assistant position, contact the the Koc University International Office.
A unique research opportunity during the summer is the Koç University Summer Research Program for Undergraduates. Additional Information

Participation in UCEAP is a great value! The cost of studying abroad on UCEAP programs is typically less than that of non-UC study abroad programs. The dollar figures listed in the chart below represent an estimate of: 1) the UCEAP fees for the current year, and 2) the additional amount needed to cover your living expenses in this location. Estimates for personal travel, entertainment and Non-Resident (out of state) Fees are not included.
Keep in mind that on UCEAP you take your financial aid with you. The amount of your financial aid package will take into account the total estimated costs of this experience. One advantage of selecting UCEAP for study abroad is that we facilitate the process by working with your UC Financial Aid Office (FAO), informing them of your UCEAP participation and providing them with your UCEAP budget. Just like your UC Campus billing office, we receive your financial aid and scholarships from your FAO, apply it to cover the UCEAP program fees, and disburse any remaining aid on a set schedule.

These expenses are estimated for 2017-18. Actual amounts will vary due to potential changes to UC fees, exchange rate fluctuation, etc. For a more detailed breakdown of 2017-18 payment information, visit the Participants Portal and select the appropriate program. Estimates do not include non-resident supplemental tuition. If you are subject to out-of-state tuition at your UC campus, you will pay non-resident fees on UCEAP.
Here’s what is included in the estimate:
  • Predeparture expenses (health clearance, student visa, etc.)
  • Round-trip airfare
  • UC fees
  • Cost of attending Koç University
  • On-site orientation
  • Room and board
  • Local transportation
  • Optional excursions
  • Books and other incidental expenses
  • Automatic transfer of credits and grades to your UC transcript
While on UCEAP, you are covered by UC’s accident and medical insurance, including non-medical benefits, and 24/7 travel assistance anywhere in the world.
