Study Abroad Program Overview

Program Currently Suspended

Due to safety and security concerns, the programs at Bilkent University are currently suspended for fall, spring, and year, 2017-18.
UCEAP's dedicated emergency management team monitors events 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For updates and situation reports on Turkey, see our Worldwide Alerts Page.
EAP students are fully integrated into Bilkent University classes and have access to all fields of instruction. Bilkent University is Turkey’s first private university and was founded with the goal of creating a center of excellence in higher education and research. All courses are in English, but students are able to increase their ability to interact socially with Turkish students outside of classes by studying Turkish.
Academic highlights include:
  • Opportunities to study the archaeology of Anatolia, the Ancient Near East, the Mediterranean, as well as the history of art from the Byzantine period to the 20th century through courses offered in the Department of Archaeology and History of Art; practical work complements lectures and students have the opportunity to participate in excavations
  • Courses relating to current political and security issues in the Middle East, the Balkans, and the Central Asian Republics for students in international relations and political science
Engineering courses that focus on artificial intelligence, database management, graphics, parallel processing, computer networks, software engineering, materials science and engineering, and thermodynamics
  • Beginning Turkish for study abroad students with little or no prior study of the language; a course in Turkish culture and literature is available for students with an intermediate knowledge of Turkish
Orientation at Bilkent University: Start the first day of your orientation right with a traditional Turkish breakfast and campus tour. There will be workshops, city tour, "survival" Turkish language class, and other meals throughout the orientation period. Learn how to register your courses with both the host university and UC, to make sure you receive UC credit for courses taken abroad. Participation in all sessions and events is mandatory.

Students attend classes with host country students.

Language of Instruction

English; Turkish

Courses are taught in English if there are English speakers in the class, with the exception of music courses at Bilkent, which are taught only in Turkish. These classes are Western, classical music; they are not ethnic or folk music.

If a class is being taught in Turkish, you may request the instructor to teach in English (he or she may not be aware non-Turkish students are in the class) or you may ask the Exchange Program Coordinator to request instruction in English on your behalf.

Language Study

Two weeks of Turkish language instruction precede the fall term. Turkish language study is required for fall and year students during the fall term and for spring students during the spring term.

Go to the Participants section to see current or past calendars.
Fall :
late August to mid-January*

Spring :
late January to late May

Year :
late August to late May

*The International Office may be able to help you make arrangements with each professor to take early exams so you can depart in December. Each professor has the right to allow or not allow early exams.

Extension is possible from the fall to the year.

Continuing for Spring 2015: UCEAP students will receive FREE housing (double room in dormitory) if applying by the housing application deadline (and subject to availability). Students who prefer a single dormitory room would pay only the difference in cost between single and double rooms.

You are responsible to reserve and pay for your own housing, either on- or off-campus, directly to the housing provider. Bilkent will send you a housing form along with the acceptance letter and other materials. Complete and return the form as soon as you receive it. Payment is made upon arrival.

The range of on-campus housing is vast; dorm options and costs vary much more than they do at UC. UCEAP students recommend that you choose the mid-range to "expensive" options and do not choose the cheapest options.

While the dorms are convenient and provide an excellent opportunity to meet Turkish students, all dorms have strict regulations that you will be required to follow. These regulations include curfews, which are usually midnight. All dorms are segregated by gender and visitors of the opposite sex are allowed in common rooms only; no visitors of the opposite sex are allowed in your room. All students and visitors are required to check in with the front desk every time they enter, and must be “buzzed in” to the dorms. If you plan to spend the night away from the dorm, you must inform the dorm director in advance. Alcoholic drinks are not allowed in the dorms.

Dorm #50 has received a positive evaluation from past UCEAP students.

Extracurricular Activities

Bilkent has extensive sports facilities including a new sports center with an indoor running track, aerobics studios, swimming facilities, and courts for squash, basketball, volleyball, and handball, as well as a fitness room containing a full array of free weights and stationary equipment. Intramural sports include basketball, soccer, and squash; physical education classes are available in mountaineering, aerobics, Turkish folk dancing, and more.

On-site Support

EAP students are supported by UC's network of EAP offices at every UC campus and partnerships with EAP host universities throughout the world. Local staff abroad help students integrate into the culture of their host country and provide assistance with academics, housing, safety, and other issues.

See the EAP Program Guide for program-specific details about host institutions, program structure, and courses; academic culture and conduct; internships, research, & independent study; units, exams, and grades; orientation; housing; and information about the intensive language program (if applicable).

Course Opportunities

The Engineering School at Bilkent University is very strong. All programs are ABET-accredited (Accreditation Board For Engineering And Technology), and the University also has an excellent Business School accredited by AACSB (Association To Advance Collegiate Schools Of Business).
The Social Sciences Faculty offers a wide range of courses in Political Science and International Studies, and Archaeology and Art History are also particularly strong.
Use the following resources to learn about courses on EAP:
  • Host institution online catalogs or course listings:
  • MyEAP Course Catalog lists courses previously taken by UC students. Additional courses may be available and not all courses may still be offered. Since courses in new programs have not yet been taken for credit, they may not appear in the MyEAP Course Catalog.

You are required to take a full-time course of study while abroad: 22.5 quarter/15 semester UC units per semester; usually five courses, including a required Turkish language course.

Research and Independent Study

Research and Independent study for academic credit may be possible in this program. Arrangements are generally made at the Study Center after arrival at the host institution. Pre-departure preparation may be required.

Additional Information

  • Contact the Office of International Students and Exchange Programs if you have problems contacting a professor.
Participation in UCEAP is a great value! The cost of studying abroad on UCEAP programs is typically less than that of non-UC study abroad programs. The dollar figures listed in the chart below represent an estimate of: 1) the UCEAP fees for the current year, and 2) the additional amount needed to cover your living expenses in this location. Estimates for personal travel, entertainment and Non-Resident (out of state) Fees are not included.
Keep in mind that on UCEAP you take your financial aid with you. The amount of your financial aid package will take into account the total estimated costs of this experience. One advantage of selecting UCEAP for study abroad is that we facilitate the process by working with your UC Financial Aid Office (FAO), informing them of your UCEAP participation and providing them with your UCEAP budget. Just like your UC Campus billing office, we receive your financial aid and scholarships from your FAO, apply it to cover the UCEAP program fees, and disburse any remaining aid on a set schedule.

If you are subject to out-of-state tuition at your UC campus, you will pay non-resident fees on UCEAP.
Here’s what is included in the estimate:
  • Predeparture expenses (health clearance, student visa, etc.)
  • Round-trip airfare
  • UC fees
  • Cost of attending Bilkent University
  • On-site orientation
  • Intensive Language Program
  • Room and Board
  • Local transportation
  • Optional excursions

Application Information and Deadlines

Important: If you are planning to participate in back to back study abroad programs (with UCEAP or any other organization), you must notify your campus study abroad office. There are important things to consider when participating in consecutive programs, such as program dates and visa requirements. Not all program combinations are possible.

Application deadlines and information on the application process are available through your Campus EAP Office. Supplemental pre-departure materials will be required for many programs, including, but not limited to, host institution applications, visa and housing applications, medical clearances, etc.

For participation in the program, you must meet all deadlines and submit complete application materials.

These are minimum requirements. After selection by your UC Campus EAP Office, final admission is determined by Bilkent University.
