Instructions for Online Application

Contact uc-reciprocity@eap.ucop.edu to obtain the UCEAP Reciprocal Exchanges Nomination letter. You will need it to verify your graduate reciprocity non-degree/no-fee exchange status when completing your online application.

If a department deadline is approaching, do not wait for a response from a UC professor to apply. Late applications may be rejected by the department.

Each campus provides special instructions for EAP graduate Reciprocal Exchanges applicants. Follow these instructions so that you can be identified as an EAP applicant and exempt from application fees.

    • Public Health: Applicants must complete the SOPHAS application and pay the SOPHAS system use fee.

    • Graduate Division Application:
      • Proposed department and degree program: E-mail uc-reciprocity@eap.ucop.edu to request a CWO web link for your program. After you receive the CWO link, you can start your application for that program.
    • Residency Status: Select "J1-Student"
    • Alternate Contact Name: Enter "UCEAP"
    • Alternate Contact E-mail Address: Enter "uc-reciprocity@eap.ucop.edu
    • Transcript Upload: Upload your UCEAP Reciprocal Exchanges Nomination letter as the first page of your home university transcript. To obtain the letter, contact uc-reciprocity@eap.ucop.edu.
    • Payment: Select "Fee exemption". Select the "Education Abroad Program" category on "Fee Exemption" list. 
    • After applying, inform UCEAP:
      E-mail uc-reciprocity@eap.ucop.edu with the subject line UCEAP application submission. In the text include your full name, UC of application, home university, department (and program) and link to departmental requirements webpage. This tells UCEAP that your application is complete and that you have submitted it electronically.

UC Davis

    • Programs not open to UCEAP students: Law, veterinary medicine, medicine, business
  • Application
  • Special Instructions 
    • Plans for Graduate Study - Degree Objective: Select the degree most applicable to you.
    • International Applicants: Enter "J-1"; Complete other sections only if you have a current (non-tourist) US visa.
    • Academic History: List all universities you have attended after high school. Send the required official transcripts accompanied by English translations to UCEAP through your home university international office.
    • Transcript Upload: Do not mail your transcripts directly to the academic program to which you are applying. Upload your UCEAP Reciprocal Exchanges Nomination letter as the first page of each transcript you submit. To upload the letter, contact uc-reciprocity@eap.ucop.edu. If you are selected, you will be required to provide official, university-issued transcript for each institution you have attended.
    • Applicant Fellowship: Not applicable to UCEAP students; skip completing this section and click "Save and Continue."
    • Application Fee: In the Application Fee Payment section, click on "Check (I'll mail my payment)" option, but do not mail payment.
    • After applying, inform UCEAP:
      E-mail uc-reciprocity@eap.ucop.edu with the subject line UCEAP application submission. In the text include your full name, UC of application, home university, department (and program) and link to departmental requirements webpage. This tells UCEAP that your application is complete and you have submitted it electronically.

UC Irvine

  • Deadline: If the deadline for your program of application has passed, contact UCEAP.

    • Programs not open to UCEAP students: business, medicine
    • Public Health: Applicants must complete the SOPHAS application and pay the SOPHAS system use fee.

    • Citizenship/Residency: Select "J1 Foreign (Other)"
    • Academic History: List all universities you have attended after high school. Send the required official transcripts accompanied by English translations to UCEAP through your home university international office. Do not mail your transcripts directly to the academic program to which you are applying. UCEAP will forward your transcripts to your academic program of application along with your UCEAP Reciprocal Exchanges Nomination letter.
    • Financial Support: Not applicable to UCEAP students; skip completing this section and click "Save."
    • Application Fee Waiver: In the application pay fee section, choose the "check or money order" option but do not send payment. Once the application is submitted, e-mail both the Graduate Division, jitoh@uci.edu, and UCEAP, uc-reciprocity@eap.ucop.edu, with the subject line UCEAP application submission, in the text include your full name, UC of application, home university, department (and program) and link to departmental requirements webpage. This tells UCEAP that your application is complete and that you have submitted it electronically.
    • After applying, notify UCEAP if you do not receive an e-mail acknowledgment of your online application within 7-10 days of its submission.
    • Do not submit an application fee payment.

UC Los Angeles

    • Biographical Data:
      • Citizenship and Residency: Non-US Citizens, select US visa type "J1-Exchange"
    • Plans for Graduate Study:
      • For Application Type, select "EAP" from the drop down box.
      • For Degree Objective, select "Non Degree Objective."
    • Academic History: International applicants do not need to calculate a Grade Point Average.
    • Transcript Upload: Upload your UCEAP Reciprocal Exchanges Nomination letter as the first page of your home university transcript. To obtain the letter, contact uc-reciprocity@eap.ucop.edu.
    • Fellowship Application: Not applicable to UCEAP students
    • Supporting Documents Upload: Upload your UCEAP Reciprocal Exchanges Nomination letter, in addition to your program-specific documents. To obtain the letter, contact uc-reciprocity@eap.ucop.edu.
    • After applying, inform UCEAP:
      E-mail uc-reciprocity@eap.ucop.edu with the subject line UCEAP application submission.  In the text include your full name, UC of application, home university, department (and program) and link to departmental requirements webpage.
    • The application fee will be automatically waived if you select "EAP" for your application type.

UC Merced

    • Application Fee: Select Request a Fee Waiver.
      E-mail with the subject line UCEAP application ready to submit to uc-reciprocity@eap.ucop.edu​. Include this information in your message: your e-mail address exactly as it appears in your UC application, your full name, UC of application, home university, department (and program) and link to department requirements webpage. This tells UCEAP that your application is complete. 
    • Do not submit your application until you receive a fee waiver code from the Graduate Admissions Office.

UC Riverside

    • Proposed department and degree program: Do not initiate an online application. Contact uc-reciprocity@eap.ucop.edu  to request a non-degree application authorization first. After you receive a confirmation, you can initiate your online application.
      For degree objective, select "Non-degree".
    • Residency: Select "J1 - Exchange Visitor" for Current Visa Type.
    • Educational Background/Transcript Upload: Upload your UCEAP Reciprocal Exchanges Nomination letter as the first page of your home university transcript. To obtain the letter, contact uc-reciprocity@eap.ucop.edu.
    • Additional Information - Sponsoring Organizations: Select "UC Education Abroad Program (EAP) Reciprocal Exchanges".
    • E-mail with the subject line UCEAP application ready to submit to uc-reciprocity@eap.ucop.edu. Include this information in your message: your e-mail address exactly as it appears in your UC application, your full name, UC of application, home university, department (and program) and link to departmental requirements webpage. This tells UCEAP that your application is complete and ready to be submitted on your behalf.
    • Do not send in an application fee payment.

UC San Francisco

There are currently no instructions for applying to UC San Francisco.


UC Santa Barbara

    • Degree Program and Offerings: Select "Non-Degree Objective (NO)", if the "NO" option is not available, select the degree most applicable to you.
    • Citizenship: Select "J-1"
    • Educational History/Transcript Upload: Upload your UCEAP Reciprocal Exchanges Nomination letter as the first page of your home university transcript. To obtain the letter, contact uc-reciprocity@eap.ucop.edu.
    • Financial Information: Graduate School Funding section: check "None"
    • Statements & Supplemental Documents: In addition to the required documents, upload again your UCEAP Reciprocal Exchanges Nomination letter. Enter UCEAP Reciprocal Exchanges Nomination for "Document Type".
    • Application Fee: Click on the  "Payment Information" tab to scroll down to the fee waiver information. Click the "Request Fee Waiver" button to select "Option 1" and "Other". Enter "UCEAP" as the program. Upload  the UCEAP reciprocal Exchanges Nomination letter as the supporting document. Do not pay the fee.
    • After applying, inform UCEAP:
      E-mail uc-reciprocity@eap.ucop.edu with the subject line UCEAP application submission. In the text include your full name, UC of application, home university, department (and program) and link to departmental requirements webpage. This tells UCEAP that your application is complete and that you have submitted it electronically.

UC Santa Cruz

    • Recommendations: In addition to your three letters of recommendation, register  UCEAP Reciprocal Exchanges as a recommender. Enter "UCEAP" for First Name; "Reciprocal Exchanges" for Last Name; "UCEAP Systemwide" for Institution; "uc-reciprocity@eap.ucop.edu" for E-mail Address
    • Financial Support: Not applicable to UCEAP students; select "section not applicable."
    • Diversity Fellowships: Not applicable to UCEAP students; select "section not applicable."
    • Payment: Select "Fee exemption"
    • Fee Exemption: Select "UCEAP Reciprocity". List your home institution, and the start term and year of your home institution graduate program. Enter "UCEAP Reciprocity" as the program sponsor and uc-reciprocity@eap.ucop.edu for the e-mail address.
    • After applying, inform UCEAP:
      E-mail with the subject line UCEAP application submission to uc-reciprocity@eap.ucop.edu. Include this information in your message: your full name, UC of application, home university, department (and program) and link to departmental requirements webpage. This tells UCEAP that your application is complete and that you have submitted it electronically.
