What is Academic Integration (AI)?
Academic Integration is an initiative and priority of the UC Education
Abroad Program (EAP). It is broadly defined as the comprehensive
integration of EAP programs and courses into the curricula of the
University of California campuses.
The two primary goals of “AI” are to (1) further engage and invest
academic units in EAP, and (2) demonstrate the feasibility of, and
reduce academic barriers to, participation in EAP for students in
all disciplines. In addition, AI initiatives may: increase enrollment
in EAP; streamline and automate work processes; highlight opportunities
for underrepresented student cohorts; or help internationalize the
University of California.
AI efforts can be grouped into the five categories below. Underpinning
these categories, Research & Assessment activities inform
and evaluate AI efforts.
- Outreach: Engagement of academic units in dialogue about
ways study abroad can be integrated into their curricula.
- Promotion: Advertisement and advocacy of study abroad
opportunities in academic venues and discipline-specific EAP publications.
- Advising: Production of major-specific advisory materials
about studying abroad.
- Requirements: Approval of EAP courses to fulfill major,
minor, breadth, and other degree requirements.
- Bridges: Development of UC courses and training that
provide a foundation for or build on study abroad experiences.
Thus, AI makes international study a more prominent, accessible,
and integral component of UC curricula, helping students
fit study abroad appropriately and seamlessly into their academic
programs, helping advisors harmonize advising messages from
academic units and EAP, and helping faculty strengthen and
promote relationships with international partners whose curricula
complement and supplement those of UC.
As a consequence, academic integration activities pervade EAP’s
planning, research, development, academic oversight, and management
efforts.
