Advising

EAP publishes promotional materials for certain disciplines, but also encourages and assists individual academic units in developing their own study abroad advisory materials. Such materials show students (and their parents) that study abroad is a valued, if not integral, component of their academic programs.

Study Abroad MAPs (Major Advising Pages)

A Major Advising Page provides students in a given academic program with information as specific to their major as possible about why, where, and when to study abroad; how to prepare academically before leaving; what types of courses to take while abroad (and, perhaps, which will count towards major requirements); and how to build on the experiences after returning home.

  • MAPs should be considered living documents which can always be improved (rather than being “finished” or “completed”), and should be updated annually.
  • Although a MAP is usually co-authored, it should speak primarily in the voice of the academic unit, not EAP.
  • MAPs should be available online; most importantly on the website of the academic units that produced them and the appropriate campus EAP website. Space permitting, hard copies of MAPs could also be provided.

Campus Major Advising Pages

MAP Template (Single page print format in Microsoft Word)

  • Yellow highlights are campus-specific; blue highlights are department-specific.
  • Fonts are keyed to two primary styles so that changes can be easily and consistently applied to the entire document.
  • Depending on the settings of Word, the high-resolution EAP logo in the top left corner may not display on the screen—it will however print fine.

Note: The University of Minnesota has Major Advising Sheets for most disciplines, which can be referenced here.

Academic Planning Forms

To help insure appropriate academic planning, EAP requires students to complete an Academic Planning Form (APF) as a part of their pre-departure preparation. Because academic policies and procedures vary by campus, APFs are campus-specific. However, a standardized EAP Preliminary Academic Planning Form has been developed for use system-wide. The PreAPF demonstrates a student's academic planning prior to review and signature by a campus academic authority (e.g., program, department, or college advisor). Current APFs can be found here.

Other Advisory Materials

  • Guidelines for Selecting EAP Courses: Because EAP cannot guarantee the availability of specific courses at host institutions, students may need to select alternate courses once abroad. Thus, academic units should consider providing their students with guidelines to follow when selecting EAP courses, accompanied by a detailed summary of major requirements and their intentions. Example: International Relations (Davis) (PDF).
  • Major Planners/4-year plans: Major planners are a way for academic units to illustrate how, with proper planning, EAP can fit into their majors without extending time to degree. Example: Biological Sciences (Irvine)

Interested in producing any of these materials?

  1. Check the Academic Information page or the Academic Integration Resources page to see if something already exists that can be adapted to meet your needs.
  2. Send any materials you develop to UOEAP for posting to this website. This will benefit your counterparts at other campuses who decide to produce related materials.
