General Catalogs

Academic units are encouraged to include at least a generic endorsement of EAP in their sections of the general catalogs. This can be strengthened by incorporating customized information such as preparation advice and specific recommendations—some examples are provided below.

Endorsement Template

  • The _________ [Department/Program] [strongly] encourages its majors [and minors] to participate in the UC Education Abroad Program (EAP) [for a summer, semester, or academic year]. EAP offers excellent opportunities all over the world for students to gain comparative perspectives in their fields of study and experience other cultures, while making normal progress toward their degrees. In addition, many EAP programs [are in English-speaking countries or offer courses taught in English, and many] have unique internship, research, independent study, and/or field work possibilities. Participants pay UC fees, continue to receive UC financial aid, and are eligible for special grants and scholarships. Interested students should begin planning well in advance to maximize integration of their studies abroad with their overall academic program. Join the thousands of UC students who study abroad each year through EAP! For more information, _______________.

  • Biological Sciences, UC Santa Cruz: The UC Education Abroad Program (EAP) offers qualified students unique opportunities to broaden their educational horizons. The biological sciences departments encourage interested students to participate. Many programs are in English-speaking countries or use English for advanced courses. Many programs offer small classes, extensive laboratories, and/or field research experience. There are excellent programs for biological science students in Costa Rica, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Denmark, and Germany, among others. The Costa Rica Tropical Biology Program is of note to students interested in tropical biology and ecology. Held spring and fall quarters at the Monteverde Research Station, this program gives students experience with hands-on field research, offers a homestay program, and carries credit for two upper-division biology courses. The University of Queensland (Australia) offers an intensive, full-semester Marine Science Program, which includes a stay at a research station on the Great Barrier Reef, near sheltered mangrove and seagrass habitats. Molecular, cell, and developmental biology majors and premedical students might want to consider the Human Biology Program at the Panum Institute in Denmark. This program is taught in English for advanced students planning careers in medicine or biomedical research. Students interested in study abroad need to get an early start on their basic science requirements, including general and organic chemistry, math, and introductory biology (20A, 20B, 20C, and 20L). Visit the EAP office as soon as possible to begin planning, and seek advice about your schedule from the biological sciences undergraduate adviser and/or faculty adviser.
  • Anthropology, UC Irvine: The faculty encourages Anthropology majors or minors to study abroad and experience a different culture while making progress toward degree objectives. The Center for International Education, which includes the Education Abroad Program (EAP) and the International Opportunities Program (IOP), assists students in taking advantage of many worldwide opportunities. For example, EAP offers excellent opportunities to study anthropology at many universities abroad and courses taken for departmental requirement C, D, and E would be excellent choices to take. Study abroad also can provide opportunities for cross-cultural experience, field research, and foreign language training. See the Center for International Education section of the Catalogue for additional information.
  • Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, UC San Diego: Students are encouraged to participate in the Education Abroad Programs (EAP) in their second year of study. Though this will necessitate a third year of study to meet MPIA requirements, the opportunity provides unparalleled experience in the selected regional study area and language. By petition, certain credits earned through EAP may be applied to the MPIA degree requirements.
