Requiring Study Abroad
The academic units below have a study abroad or international experience
requirement or expectation. There are many more units that strongly
encourage students to go abroad without making it mandatory
(see General Catalogs). In the
future, EAP hopes to work closely with academic units developing
new majors or programs to insure that EAP is integrated into these
majors or programs from the outset.
UC Berkeley
- Global
Management Concentration, Haas School of Business: The Haas
Global Management Concentration is a rigorous program for UC Berkeley
business majors who are truly dedicated to pursuing an internationally
oriented education and career. This program enables Haas students
to study abroad, improve language skills, and pursue a variety
of international business and area studies courses. In recognition
of the rigor of this program, the concentration will be noted
on the final transcript and on a certificate from the Haas School
of Business.
UC Davis
- International Relations
Program: All International Relations (IR) majors are strongly
encouraged to study abroad for at least one quarter. As of fall
2005, those who choose Track IV are required to study or do an
internship abroad for a minimum of one quarter...Track I, II,
and III students who choose to take advantage of an education
abroad experience of at least four weeks in duration may fulfill
the Area Studies requirement by completing three courses instead
of four.
UC Irvine
- Economics--Specialization
in International Issues and Economics: The department encourages
students to take the electives for the specialization in International
Issues and Economics while studying in the Education Abroad Program
(EAP).
- International
Studies Program: International Studies majors are also required
to pursue some form of international experience for a minimum
of one quarter. Majors are encouraged to study abroad through
the Education Abroad Program (EAP) or the International Opportunities
Program (IOP), which are available for periods of a quarter, semester,
year, or summer. When this is not possible, work overseas (through
IOP) or a domestic internship with the UCDC Internship Program,
the Washington D.C. Center Program, or the Social Science Internship
Program (Social Science 197) with an international focus may be
substituted.
UC Los Angeles
- Global
Studies Major: Global Studies students are expected to participate
in a summer Global Learning Institute at one of the several strategic
locations around the world (Global Studies 110A, 110B). These
travel study programs act as a lens allowing students to see first-hand
how the issues addressed in the Global Studies core curriculum
are playing out around the world in places with distinctive histories
and cultures. Merit based scholarships are available to select
Global Studies students who participate in Global Learning Institutes,
as well as to support senior research projects.
UC Riverside
- Global
Studies Program: Students are required to complete their major
with a capstone experience. This may be an advanced seminar in
a topic of global significance, a major research paper supervised
by a Global Studies faculty member or a study abroad program approved
by the Chair of Global Studies.
UC Santa Barbara
- Film
Studies M.A./Ph.D.: During the remainder of the fourth year
the student will be encouraged to study at a research site abroad
or in the U.S. for a period of between three and six months.
- Global
& International Studies M.A.: Students typically spend
the summer of their first year and fall quarter of their second
year abroad, taking courses and doing internships with non-governmental
organizations, governmental bodies, or businesses.
UC Santa Cruz
- Global Economics
Major: All students are required to spend at least one semester
in overseas study in an approved course of study, usually (but
not necessarily) through the UC Education Abroad Program (EAP).
Numerous overseas study sites are available through the EAP office.
Students may also choose a year-long program. Use of these programs
requires full application to EAP. As the course offerings at the
various EAP centers differ, the student will want to plan carefully
the appropriate plan of study. The student may use the time spent
abroad to further language study, to meet the Area Study course
requirement, or to meet some of the upper-division economics course
requirements. Programs other than the UC EAP study abroad program
must be approved by the Director of Undergraduate Studies to ensure
that credit earned is transferable towards the UCSC degree. One
such program, with which we work closely, is the IEP, International
Education Program at Foothill College, which offers paid summer
jobs and internships in Europe, South America, and Asia.
