Value of Study Abroad
These resources and information about the value of study abroad
are intended to be shared with interested UC faculty, staff, students,
and parents. Additional information can be found on the Why

Comments page contains many testimonials about the academic,
personal, and professional impact of EAP.
Students can grow intellectually in many ways while studying abroad.
However, international education literature and research most consistently
note the following benefits:
- participation in a foreign language and cultural immersion
program results in increased language competence and cultural
fluency
- taking courses in their major while abroad offers students
a comparative perspective on the discipline and related subject
areas
- acquiring knowledge in broad, general areas of study increases
a student’s capacity to think systematically and critically
- hands-on international opportunities such as internships, field
training, research, and independent study, are highly valued by
students and can benefit their future careers or graduate study
In addition, students are also shown to mature emotionally, to
improve their non-verbal communication skills, and to develop a
more sophisticated level of international understanding and cross-cultural
sensitivity.
