Course Description

This course provides an overview of 20th-century Mexico and emphasizes conversation and intensive listening comprehension through the study of current events and social institutions. Topics include environment, education, economics, demographics, indigenous cultures, family, religion, migration within Mexico and to the U.S., and politics in the new Mexico. Through independent projects based on interviews, periodical sources, field trips, discussions with their host families, and other forms of research, students investigate churches, schools, government offices, and industries. The resulting reports are evaluated for content and for advanced vocabulary and grammar. Assessment for the course is based on these weekly compositions, oral reports, class participation, a midterm exam and a final exam.
