Course Description

 

This course introduces students to a variety of selected literary texts and plays from prehispanic to contemporary authors. Class time is devoted to thematic discussions of Mexican literary works. Students read from an anthology prepared for this class that includes prehispanic poetry and excerpts from such writers as Hernan Cortes, Bernal Diaz del Castillo, Bartolome de las Casas, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, Javier Clavijero, Jose Joaquin Fernandez de Lizardi, Ignacio Manuel Altamirano, Jose Vasconcelos, Mariano Azuela, Juan Rulfo, Carlos Fuentes, Octavio Paz, among others. Assessment for the course is based on weekly written compositions, class participation, an oral presentation, a midterm, and a final exam.
