Description

This course is intended for students who learn Vietnamese as a foreign language. The goal throughout the course is to learn standard Vietnamese and communicative skills in Vietnamese at the beginning level, with emphasis on the alphabet and phonetic systems, conversational skills, basic grammar, reading, and writing. This class is conducted in both English and Vietnamese. By the end of the course, students are expected to have acquired the following: Vietnamese orthographical system; Vietnamese phonetic system; basic grammar (Yes-No questions, WH-questions, tag questions, parts of speech, etc.); basic vocabulary and useful expressions for the classroom and everyday life; ability to converse on simple topics (greeting, self-introduction, school activities, weather, etc.); ability to describe simple objects using descriptive adjectives and names of colors; ability to locate items using locational prepositions; and ability to enunciate accurately any Vietnamese words. * Units reduced to correspond with UC quarter units for comparable course work.
