Course Description

 

This is an intensive intermediate-level course for students who have completed at least three quarters of university-level Chinese or the equivalent. The course focuses on training students' reading and writing skills. Students learn Lessons 31 to 55 and Lessons 1 to 5 of the texts. Each unit of the text includes new words, grammar, characters, and exercises. Vocabulary and grammar are explained by examples and context to improve students' comprehension and character-writing ability. Reading and writing exercises and explanations are used to strengthen their grasp of grammar and vocabulary learned and to further their understanding of the topics covered. Dictation and essays are used to train students in writing. By the end of the course students will have mastered 170 common grammar points, 1900 phrases in common use, and be able to read 700-word pieces (narrative, explanatory, thesis), and be able to write narratives and practical pieces. Texts: Xiaoqui Li, Li Huang, and Xujing Quin, BOYA CHINESE ELEMENTARY LEVEL, QIBU (BEGINNING) II; INTERMEDIATE LEVEL, JIASU (SPEED) I. Assessment: class participation and presentation (20%), two weekly tests (40%), final exam (40%).
