This course explores the history and culture of Brazil from a multi- disciplinary perspective, placing them in the context of the larger Black Atlantic by tracing the development of social relations in Bahia. The course is divided into 4 modules: the history of race relations in Brazil; Afro-Brazilian religious traditions and their relationship with their African roots; the Black Movement in contemporary Brazilian society and questions of race and gender in a political context; representations of racial identities in the arts through literature, music, dance, film, and television. Regular classes meet twice weekly and are supplemented by cultural activities and guest lectures. Assessment is based on attendance, a mid-term, a paper, and a final exam. The course is crosslisted in Ethnic Studies, History, Latin American Studies, and Portuguese.
