Course
Description
|
This course provides intensive full-immersion instruction in advanced Italian language and culture. The course emphasizes comprehension and communication skills (written and oral) and acquisition of technical jargons. The course begins with a grammar review of the first two years of university-level Italian, then builds into more complex morphological and syntactical structures (concessive, casual, conditional, relative, and interrogative clauses), refining knowledge of grammar and specific lexicon. Students learn to transform clauses from explicit to implicit and the use connectives. In-class activities, homework assignments, and examinations develop student's abilities to use figures of speech, learn the use of Italian idiomatic expressions, and produce argumentative texts. Through required afternoon and evening activities conducted in Italian, students gain technical language for specialized fields of study. Educational experiences include field trips, guided city walks, site visits and a night at the opera. The course also includes on-site lectures and hands-on excavation experiences led by an Italian archaeologist at excavations at Ostia Antica. Attendance is required at all lectures and course activities.
