Course Description

This course builds upon Italian composition and conversation skills developed during previous formal language study. Students develop vocabulary for expressing themselves on topics dealing with daily activities and study the derivation and composition of words, paraphrasing, and reformulating. Their writing competence includes linear and precise descriptions on familiar topics, storytelling of past experiences, and descriptions of real or imaginary facts. Students read simple and linear factual texts on subjects of daily life, descriptions of events, argumentative texts with familiar subjects, and feelings and wishes in letters and personal texts. They learn to orally produce in a fluid, clear, and articulated manner. The verb tenses studied include a review of the indicative tense (present, past, imperfect, simple future), contrast imperfect/past, pluperfect indicative, present and past conditional, agreement in the present indicative, and indirect discourse. Other grammatical elements include forms and uses of all prepositions; connectives; relative pronouns; comparatives and superlatives; and a review of other grammatical elements from Level 1 and Level 2.
