Course Description

This course is an in-depth Italian composition and conversation class for students who have had the equivalent of one year of formal language study. Students read argumentative texts and articles and reports relative to the contemporary world. They produce clear and precise descriptions and explanations on various topics supporting and developing the ideas. Students understand familiar topics and follow conversations between native speakers and develop knowledge of the derivation and composition of words and some specialized terms. The students attain the ability to comprehend the fundamental ideas of complex texts on abstract and concrete topics and react with relative fluidity and spontaneity. The verb tenses studied include the indicative; the perfect and imperfect tenses; present and past conditional; the imperative; the subjunctive tenses; connective conjunctions; and verbs and expressions that require the subjunctive. Other grammatical elements include continued study from Level 3 of prepositions; direct, indirect, combined, and relative pronouns; idiomatic phrases; 'ci' and 'ne;' indefinite pronouns and adjectives; possessive and demonstrative; and review of the nominal system and adjectives.
