Course Description

This course is an in-depth Italian composition and conversation class for students who have had several quarters of formal language study. Students compose texts that describe real or imaginary subjects that are clear, articulated, and well developed and they read lengthy and complex texts that deal with areas of social, professional, and academic life. Students give precise and clear descriptions of complex topics and provide clear and structured explanations of complex arguments. The students develop the ability to understand discourses on abstract and complex topics in which idiomatic and colloquial expressions are found. They are asked to follow complex conversations between native speakers, texts of public announcements, and recorded material. The verb tenses studied include a review of the indicative tense, the subjunctive tense and its use in independent propositions, and the conditional; hypothetical phrases; indefinite modes (gerund, infinite, past participle, agreement indicative and subjunctive); passive (essere, venire); and direct and indirect discourse. Other grammatical elements include extensive use of prepositions and connectives, and a review of the previous four levels.
