China: Peking University, Beijing

Host Institution

Peking University, Beijing

Highlights

The EAP curriculum is tailored to three groups of students:

  • Tier 1 students with limited Chinese take language study through the College of Chinese Language and Culture where the classes are designed to improve proficiency in spoken and written Chinese and to provide information about Chinese culture and society.
  • Tier 2 students, who have language skills above the level offered by the College of Chinese Language and Culture take courses through Peking University’s Chinese Department, where courses are designed for foreigners and are taught in Chinese at a level more easily understood than that of regular university courses. If language ability is adequate, especially by the second semester, these students are strongly encouraged to take regular university classes.
  • Tier 3 students, those who have native or near-native Chinese ability and who score high on the required language exam, usually take at least some of their courses from the university’s regular offerings taught in standard Chinese (for example, in art, Chinese, economics, history, literature, philosophy, and political science). The Study Center hires local students as tutors to assist UC students with their regular university courses.
