Japan: Selection Criteria
Students must submit a complete application to the Campus EAP Office.

Application deadlines
Undergraduate applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
General
Requirements vary by program. Most programs have prerequisites and all programs
have a minimum GPA requirement. Some programs require one to two years of university-level
training in the host country language. For further details see your Campus EAP
Office and the EAP website.
In addition to program-specific requirements, all applicants must meet the following
minimum requirements:
- Serious academic goals and a clear plan for integrating EAP studies into
the student’s UC degree program
- Social and cross-cultural sensitivity; maturity; ability to adapt successfully
to a different environment and a new education system; ability to assess and
exhibit appropriate behavior in a variety of situations
- Willingness to abide by program regulations
- Endorsement by the Campus EAP Selection Committee and completion of all
campus-specific requirements (an interview may be required)
Intensive Japanese Language and Culture Program
Tsuru University
- Class level: sophomore, junior, senior (sophomores are encouraged to apply)
- Language prerequisite: Minimum of one year of first-year, university-level Japanese and maximum of two years of university-level Japanese (not higher than second year). If at the time the program starts it will have been a year or more since students last took a course in Japanese, it is recommended that they refresh their proficiency prior to departure. Students should consult with their Campus EAP Advisor for details.
- GPA: 3.0 cumulative GPA at the time of application and maintained through the end of the last term prior to departure and 3.0 language GPA by the end of the last term prior to departure (or earlier if required by the Campus EAP Office). Students below a 3.0 must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application.
- Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection. The final admission decision is made by the host institution.
Global Studies Program
Meiji Gakuin University
- Class level: advanced sophomore (spring only), junior, senior, graduate (undergraduate course work only)
- GPA: 3.0 cumulative GPA at the time of application and maintained through the end of the last term prior to departure. Students below a 3.0 must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application
- Other: Open to social sciences majors with interest in the program’s primary themes.
- Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection. The
final admission decision is made by the host institution.
Contemporary Japanese Culture Program
International Christian University–UC Joint Program
- Class level: sophomore, junior, senior, graduate
- GPA: 3.0 cumulative GPA at the time of application and maintained through the end of the last term prior to departure. Students below a 3.0 GPA must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application.
- Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection. The final admission decision is made by the host institution.

- Class level: sophomore, junior, senior, graduate (graduate students may attend ICU, Sophia, Keio, and Doshisha only)
- Language prerequisites: If at the time the program starts it will have been a year or more since students last took a course in Japanese, it is recommended that they refresh their proficiency. Students should consult with their Campus EAP Advisor for details.
- ICU, Sophia, Keio, and Doshisha year: Minimum one year university-level Japanese
- Doshisha spring: Minimum one semester/two quarters university-level
Japanese
- Tsukuba: Minimum of one semester/two quarters university-level
Japanese and maximum of two years of university-level Japanese (not
higher than second year)

- Class level: junior, senior, graduate
- Language prerequisite: Minimum three years of university-level Japanese. Most courses taught in Japanese require native or near-native language ability. If at the time the program starts it will have been a year or more since students last took a course in Japanese, it is recommended that they refresh their proficiency. Students should consult with their Campus EAP Advisor for details.
- GPA: 3.0 cumulative GPA at the time of application and maintained through the end of the last term prior to departure; 3.0 language GPA by the end of the last term prior to departure (or earlier if required by the Campus EAP Office). Students below a 3.0 must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application.
- Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection for
EAP. The final admission decision is made by the host institution.
Engineering Programs in English
Tohoku University, Sendai (JYPE)
Tokyo Institute of Technology (YSEP) (canceled after 2007-08)
- Class level:
Tohoku: sophomore (spring only), junior, senior
Tokyo Institute of Technology: seniors only
- Language prerequisite: Prior study of Japanese is helpful
but not required
- GPA: 3.0 cumulative GPA at the time of application and maintained
through the end of the last term prior to departure. Students below
a 3.0 must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application.
- Other: Engineering major or related field
- Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection. The final admission decision is made by the host institution.
- Space is limited in the year-long TIT YSEP program and the Tohoku
spring engineering program. Students should carefully review their goals
and the objectives of the programs to ensure an appropriate and successful
academic fit.
