Taiwan: Semester and Academic Year Programs - National Taiwan University, TaipeiHost institutionNational Taiwan University, Taipei HighlightsThe prestigious National Taiwan University (NTU), one of the top-ranked universities in Asia, offers a comprehensive curriculum in virtually all fields. In addition, EAP in Taiwan offers excellent opportunities to study Chinese language and take Asian studies courses taught in English. NTU’s main campus is in a spacious, park-like setting that is easily accessible from the bustling heart of downtown Taipei. (details) Duration Fall semester: early September to mid-December or mid-January Spring semester dates may vary depending on the dates of Chinese New Year. Extension is possible from the fall to the academic year. Academic FocusChinese language instruction and a limited number of EAP core courses taught in English on Chinese or Taiwanese literature, art, history, film, and society and culture. One EAP core course is required each term. Regular host university course work in a wide variety of fields is available to students who have adequate proficiency in standard Chinese. Students with native or near-native Chinese language ability are strongly recommended to apply to the year program; they will take all (or all but one) of their courses in the regular NTU curriculum taught in Chinese. Fall semester: NTU courses end in mid-January. Fall students who take regular NTU courses must remain in Taipei through the end of the NTU semester in mid-January. Early departures are not permitted. Students attend language classes and English-taught classes arranged by EAP with UC students. Students attend regular NTU courses with host country students and international students. Language of InstructionStandard Chinese and English Language StudyChinese language study is required each term for students who are not proficient. UnitsStudents are required to take a full-time course of study while abroad: 25 UC quarter units per semester (four courses) for students who take language courses and a core course; 21 UC quarter units per semester (usually four or five courses, depending on the number of units per course) for students who take NTU courses only. HousingMost EAP students live in NTU residence halls. Students may make alternate arrangements, although it is usually difficult and costly.
