Australia: Beyond the ClassroomStudentshipsEAP students in Australia may become involved in a variety of “research studentships.” Students are paired with Australian faculty members on a formal, but voluntary basis. Students are exposed to the ways in which research ideas are generated, methodologies are applied to solve research questions, research funds are obtained, and/or research results are presented. In each case, a student actively participates in the faculty member’s research. EAP students have taken advantage of such opportunities in archaeology, molecular biology, psychology, sociology, marine biology, and chemistry. Students interested in exploring studentship possibilities should contact the EAP Study Center in Melbourne prior to departure at uceap@bigpond.com. Internships Several internships in government and industry are available to UC students.
Internship opportunities are available to students studying at the Australian
National University in any discipline. For example, through the Australian
National Internships Program, students receive credit for undertaking
a research project over one semester of study with a public institution,
such as the Federal Parliament, the Australian Public (civil) Service,
or with a non-governmental organization (NGO). Students may intern with
senators, members of Parliament, or in parliamentary committees to research
aspects of public policy ranging from global politics and development
issues to social and environmental policy and issues of governance.
