Canada: Program OverviewOverviewEAP students at UBC may study for the fall semester, spring semester, or full academic year. A wide range of academic fields are available. During the program UBC students take courses in their major or in an allied field. Fields recommended include anthropology, Asian and Pacific regional studies, biological sciences, forestry, marine sciences, psychology, and women’s studies. EAP students are not eligible to take courses in the faculties of Dentistry, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Film, Medicine, and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Also, there is very limited availability to courses in the Department of Commerce and Business Administration. UC students attending UBC must be independent and self-motivated, particularly regarding their choice of course work for their academic objectives. UBC course work and grading are competitive. Special Opportunity for Seniors and Graduate StudentsThe Bamfield Marine Station (BMS) is a unique marine-oriented research and educational facility. It is located in Barkley Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island in an open coast setting, complementing the protected water environments of the Georgia Strait, where the major Canadian government marine institutions are located. The pristine nature of the surrounding marine environment, coupled with a rich habitat and organismal diversity, makes it an ideal location for students to study behavioral ecology, evolutionary biology, marine plant aquiculture, microbiology and toxicology. EAP seniors and graduate students in marine and coastal sciences may take upper-division course work at BMS. Students enroll in the five courses described below. To be eligible, students of biology, botany, or zoology must have already completed at least two courses covering introductory ecology, introductory invertebrates, and/or nonvascular plants (highly recommended). The fall semester program runs from September through December. UC students who enroll in the fall semester Bamfield marine science program may elect to extend their stay in Canada and take courses at UBC during the spring semester. Interested students are required to submit an application to the Bamfield Marine Station in addition to the EAP application. Detailed information from the Student's GuideAcademic information in the Student's Guide typically includes program-specific details about the host institution, program structure, and courses; academic culture and conduct; units, exams, and grades; orientation; and information about the intensive language program (if applicable).
