Chile: Semester and Year Immersion Programs - SantiagoNote: The following is 2008 program information. The "details" links will show 2007 information. Some discrepancies may exist. Take careful note of which year you plan to study abroad. Host Institutions
HighlightsEAP’s two host institutions in Santiago are among the top universities in the country and each has different strengths, which makes it possible for UC students to advance their studies. With the Andes visible in the background, the stately architecture of 19th-century Europe mingles with towering skyscrapers in the expansive metropolis of Santiago. Ample parks in the downtown areas offer respite from the rush of the city. Santiago’s many international research institutes, non-governmental organizations, libraries, and museums enliven the city’s intellectual scene and provide opportunities for independent study. Public transportation is excellent within the city and throughout the country. (details) Duration Spring semester: mid-January to mid-July (calendar) Spring semester students may extend their EAP participation to the year program. Academic FocusRegular university courses. The Study Center also organizes a core (required) course for all EAP students that provides an overview of contemporary Chile and may include presentations by public figures. Students may enroll in this course (Chilean Culture and Politics) as HIST, LATAS, or POLS 120. Differences in academic strengths between the two host universities are noted in the EAP Program Wizard. For course descriptions and additional information, see the EAP Course Information page. The Study Center in Santiago is particularly active in arranging internships and independent study opportunities for qualified students. Students attend classes with international students, host country students, and other UC students in the required core course. Language of InstructionSpanish Language StudyPrograms begin with a three-week Spanish intensive language program (ILP). Spanish language study is available at the University of Chile, but not required during the semester. UnitsEAP students are required to take a full-time course of study while abroad.
