China: Beyond the Classroom
The information below is for the 2007-08 academic year. Internships for fall and year students (Beijing)In China, EAP students have worked at high profile Beijing organizations like CNN, the US Embassy, Disney, Asia Media, Air France of Beijing, and Beijing Television. Students are also finding internships working for Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) including UNESCO, the United Nations World Food Programme, and Global Village, an environmental organization. Many students find opportunities to teach English at various schools and professional language training centers, such as the New Oriental English School and Linguistics College. These internships are on a volunteer, non-paid basis. The EAP Study Center is endeavoring to collect information about internships in Beijing that may be undertaken by UC students for academic credit. A file of past internships held by UC students and a listing of American firms operating in Beijing are available at the Study Center office. The US Commercial Service office in Beijing often seeks interns to conduct market research reports, research specific industries, prepare Initial Market Insight (IMI) reports, and work on other special projects, as needed. The US Commercial Service promotes US exports to China and provides assistance to American companies wishing to conduct business in China. Many firms and companies (with the possible exception of those with English-teaching positions) are often looking for students with some Chinese language ability and are often looking for students who will be in Beijing longer than just a few months. Thus, students on the year programs may have an easier time finding internships. Students seeking internships should do some web-based research on possible options before leaving the US and should bring their resumes to distribute.
