China: Selection Criteria

Students must submit a complete application to the Campus EAP Office. Application deadlines are earlier than you think. Don't miss out!

 Application deadlines

Undergraduate applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

General

Requirements vary by program. Most programs have prerequisites and all programs have a minimum GPA requirement. Some programs require one to two years of university-level training in the host country language. For further details see your Campus EAP Office and the EAP website.

In addition to program-specific requirements, all applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Serious academic goals and a clear plan for integrating EAP studies into the student’s UC degree program
  • Social and cross-cultural sensitivity; maturity; ability to adapt successfully to a different environment and a new education system; ability to assess and exhibit appropriate behavior in a variety of situations
  • Willingness to abide by program regulations
  • Endorsement by the Campus EAP Selection Committee and completion of all campus-specific requirements (an interview may be required)

Intensive Elementary Language Program, Beijing Normal University

  • Class level: sophomore, junior, senior, graduate (language study only, not research)
  • Language prerequisite: This program is only for students with no prior background or study of Chinese.
  • GPA: 3.0 cumulative GPA by the end of the last term prior to departure (or earlier if required by the Campus EAP Office). Students below a 3.0 at the time of application must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application.
  • Other: Beijing Normal University will not admit students without a valid passport. US permanent residence and a green card are not sufficient documentation for admittance.
  • Admission:The Campus EAP Office determines selection. The final admission decision is made by the host university.

Intensive Language Program, Beijing Normal University

  • Class level: sophomore, junior, senior, graduate (language study only, not research)
  • Language prerequisite: Minimum of one semester or two quarters of university-level standard Chinese. If at the time the program starts it will have been a year or more since students last took a course in standard Chinese, it is recommended that they refresh their proficiency before departure. Students should consult with their Campus EAP Advisor for details.
  • GPA: 3.0 cumulative GPA and 3.0 language GPA by the end of the last term prior to departure (or earlier if required by the Campus EAP Office). Students below a 3.0 at the time of application must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application.
  • Other: Beijing Normal University will not admit students without a valid passport. US permanent residence and a green card are not sufficient documentation for admittance.

  • Class level: sophomore, junior, senior, graduate (language study only, not research)
  • Language prerequisite: Minimum of one semester or two quarters of university-level standard Chinese. If at the time the program starts it will have been a year or more since students last took a course in standard Chinese, it is recommended that they refresh their proficiency before departure. Students should consult with their Campus EAP Advisor for details.
  • GPA: 3.0 cumulative GPA and 3.0 language GPA by the end of the last term prior to departure (or earlier if required by the Campus EAP Office). Students below a 3.0 at the time of application must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application.
  • Other: ECNU will not admit students without a valid passport. US permanent residence and a green card are not sufficient documentation for admittance.
  • Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection. The final admission decision is made by the host university.

Beijing Normal University, Fall and Academic year

  • Class level: sophomore (fall semester only), junior, senior, graduate

  • Language prerequisites: Minimum of one semester or two quarters of university-level standard Chinese (one year preferred for students in the year program) If at the time the program starts it will have been a year or more since students last took a course in standard Chinese, it is recommended that they refresh their proficiency before departure. Students should consult with their Campus EAP Advisor for details.

  • GPA: 3.0 cumulative GPA and 3.0 language GPA by the end of the last term prior to departure (or earlier if required by the Campus EAP Office). Students below a 3.0 at the time of application must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application.

  • Other: BNU will not admit students without a valid passport. US permanent residence and a green card are not sufficient documentation for admittance.

  • Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection. The final admission decision is made by the host university.

Peking University, Beijing

  • Class level: junior, senior, graduate
  • Language prerequisites: Minimum of one year of university-level standard Chinese; two years are preferred.
    If at the time the program starts it will have been a year or more since students last took a course in standard Chinese, it is recommended that they refresh their proficiency before departure. Students should consult with their Campus EAP Advisor for details.
  • GPA: 3.0 cumulative GPA and 3.0 language GPA by the end of the last term prior to departure (or earlier if required by the Campus EAP Office). Students below a 3.0 at the time of application must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application.
  • Other: Peking University will not accept EAP students who are citizens of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), Taiwan ROC, Hong Kong SAR, or Macau, even those who are US permanent residents. In addition, Peking University will not admit students without a valid passport. US permanent residence and a green card are not sufficient documentation for admittance.
  • Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection. The final admission decision is made by the host university.

UC-Fudan University Joint Program in International Studies, Shanghai

  • Class level: junior, senior
  • GPA: 3.0 cumulative GPA at time of application. Students below a 3.0 at the time of application must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application.
  • Courses: It is strongly recommended that students take a course on Chinese history and culture prior to the program.
  • Other: Fudan University will not admit students without a valid passport. US permanent residence and a green card are not sufficient documentation for admittance.
  • Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection. The final admission decision is made by the host university.

Economics and Business Program, Fudan University, Shanghai

  • Class level: junior, senior
  • GPA: 3.0 cumulative GPA at time of departure. Students below a 3.0 at the time of application must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application.
  • Courses: It is strongly recommended that students take at least one course on Chinese history and culture prior to the program.
  • Other: Fudan University will not admit students without a valid passport. US permanent residence and a green card are not sufficient documentation for admittance.
  • Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection. The final admission decision is made by the host university.
