France: Critical Studies Program, Paris Center for Critical Studies
Host InstitutionParis Center for Critical Studies HighlightsThe program is offered in cooperation with the University of Paris III (Sorbonne Nouvelle) and is administered by the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE). It provides a multidisciplinary curriculum in theoretical aspects of the arts, humanities, and social sciences for advanced undergraduate and graduate students. The program does not offer film production. (details) Duration Fall semester: mid-August to mid-December (calendar) Qualified fall students may extend their participation to the spring. Academic FocusCore program in French, contemporary thought, and culture. Courses are designed specifically for the program and most are taught by French university faculty specialists in film theory and contemporary French thought. In addition to the course work at the Paris Center for Critical Studies, students may take one or more courses per semester at affiliated institutions such as the University of Paris III. Students attend classes with UC and other American students at the Critical Studies Center, and with French students at Paris III. Language of InstructionFrench Language StudyThe program begins with a four-week French intensive language program (ILP). A French academic writing workshop and a core course on critical theory are also required during the year. UnitsStudents are required to take a full-time course of study while abroad (approximately four courses). ILP: 3 to 8 UC quarter units are required HousingStudents share flats with French students, or live in individual furnished small studios. Housing is organized by CIEE.
