Germany: Independent Study, Field Study, and Internships

Summer Internships

Opportunities are possible during the summer following EAP. UC students can arrange internships with German companies and with the California Technology, Trade, and Commerce Agency in Frankfurt. Agriculture students can take advantage of internships on German farms and learn techniques unique to the region.

Special Opportunities at Göttingen

Independent Study

Students may arrange to do independent study in most fields, though it is limited by instructor availability. A host university instructor or the Study Center Director supervises independent work. Independent study normally involves writing a major paper in addition to having regular meetings with the instructor. Independent study should be attempted only by more advanced students. Students who are interested in a particular project should present their idea to the Study Center Director to determine whether an appropriate faculty member is available to supervise the project. Final arrangements for independent study projects are made after arrival.

Advanced Biology Internship

Advanced biology students who attend Georg-August University for the full year may apply for spring internships at the Max Planck Institute for Experimental Medicine in Göttingen. Supervised laboratory internships are available for a small number of qualified UC students. The Max Planck Institutes are world renowned for innovative research conducted in state-of-the-art facilities. Scientists and scholars from around the world conduct interdisciplinary research in the biological and natural sciences, medicine, the arts, and humanities.
