Germany: Spring Language Programs

Göttingen Advanced Program

EAP students with advanced German language ability may be eligible to spend the spring term at Georg-August University, taking regular university courses, taught in German, in a wide range of fields. Students must be linguistically prepared to take course work in German without the benefit of an intensive language program. Campus EAP Offices have additional details.

Göttingen Language and Culture Program

This program focuses on the acquisition of German language skills. All language courses are to be taken for a letter grade.

EAP’s one-semester language and culture program in Göttingen provides students with the equivalent of the first year of university-level German language instruction. The program runs from early April to mid-July. Students who have completed zero to two quarters or one semester (maximum) of university-level German and are at least third-quarter freshmen may participate.

EAP students take two intensive German language courses, each worth 9.0 UC quarter units. These courses cover basic grammar and are designed to develop conversational ability. Students learn to read elementary and intermediate level texts, and are required to give brief oral presentations on various topics. The language course meets five days a week for about three and a half hours a day.

The program also includes a 4.0 unit course on culture and society in modern Germany. This course, taught in English, meets two hours per week and has one additional hour per week for discussion.

Six excursions of cultural and historical interest are planned as a complement to the language course work. The program provides a total of approximately 22.0 UC quarter units.

Second Year German in Potsdam

EAP’s spring German language and culture program in Potsdam focuses exclusively on German language training and selected topics in German studies. Courses are designed especially for UC students to provide the equivalent of the second year of German language instruction in one semester. Students earn 22 to 24 UC quarter units.

The academic program consists of:

  • Language instruction at the second-year level, including a review of German grammar, speaking and listening practice, and the development of reading and writing skills.
  • Project work. Each student is required to select a project to work on throughout the semester, producing a written paper and oral report, both in German, at the conclusion of the program.
  • Elective course work. Students will select two courses intended to provide the cultural content of the program and the background upon which their linguistic skills will be developed. Elective course offerings will be based on an analysis of student majors.

Potsdam Spring Language Program with Fall Internship (Internship unavailable after 2007-08)

Students who have sound academic plans may study in Potsdam for the spring semester followed by a three-month, academic internship with a private company or agency in one of many locations throughout Germany. Upon completion of the Potsdam spring semester program, EAP students complete an intensive language program (ILP) in Göttingen, followed by the three-month fall internship. Internship placements and on-site logistics are coordinated by CDS International, Inc., in conjunction with the Charles Duisberg Gesellschaft. CDS works with many types of companies throughout Germany, including small family-owned businesses, medium-sized companies, and multinational holdings.
