Germany: Selection Criteria

Students must submit a complete application to the Campus EAP Office. Application deadlines are earlier than you think. Don't miss out!

 Application deadlines

Undergraduate applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

General

Requirements vary by program. Most programs have prerequisites and all programs have a minimum GPA requirement. Some programs require one to two years of university-level training in the host country language. For further details see your Campus EAP Office and the EAP website.

In addition to program-specific requirements, all applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Serious academic goals and a clear plan for integrating EAP studies into the student’s UC degree program
  • Social and cross-cultural sensitivity; maturity; ability to adapt successfully to a different environment and a new education system; ability to assess and exhibit appropriate behavior in a variety of situations
  • Willingness to abide by program regulations
  • Endorsement by the Campus EAP Selection Committee and completion of all campus-specific requirements (an interview may be required)

Academic Immersion Programs: General Studies

Georg-August University, Göttingen

Class level: junior, senior, graduate

Language prerequisite (requires one of the following):
  • Two years of university-level German
  • Three to five quarters (two to three semesters) plus completion of the Second-year German Program
  • Three to five quarters (two to three semesters) plus enrollment in the five-week summer pre-ILP in Göttingen

If at the time the program starts it will have been a year or more since students last took a course in German, it is recommended that they refresh their proficiency. Students should see their Campus EAP Advisor for details.

GPA: 3.0 cumulative and 3.0 language GPA by the end of the last term prior to departure (or earlier if required by the Campus EAP Office). Students below a 3.0 must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application.

Students participating in the pre-ILP must meet their GPA requirement by the end of the winter quarter (or spring semester) prior to departure.

Other (spring semester students only): At least one upper-division course taught entirely in German

Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection and final admission.

Berlin Area Universities

Class level: junior, senior, graduate

Language prerequisite

  • Undergraduate: Two years of university-level German by the end of the last term prior to departure (or earlier if required by the Campus EAP Office)
  • Graduate: Two years of university-level German (three or more are preferred)
  • Recommended: If at the time the program starts it will have been a year or more since students last took a course in German, they should refresh their proficiency. Students should see their Campus EAP Advisor for details.

GPA

  • Undergraduate: 3.0 cumulative and 3.0 language GPA by the end of the last term prior to departure (or earlier if required by the Campus EAP Office). Students below a 3.0 must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application.
  • Graduate: 3.0 cumulative GPA in graduate-level courses at the time of application and maintained through the end of the last term prior to departure

Other

  • Graduate: Graduate standing and departmental approval through completion of the Graduate Student Agreement and Graduate Preliminary Inquiry Form
  • Admission:The Campus EAP Office determines selection and final admission.

Intensive Language and Culture Programs

First Year German Program, University of Potsdam

  • Class level: third-quarter freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, graduate (Berkeley and Merced students must have at least sophomore standing)
  • Language prerequisite: Minimum of zero to a maximum of two quarters or one semester of beginning, university-level German
  • GPA: 2.5 cumulative GPA at the time of application and maintained through the end of the last term prior to departure. No exceptions.
  • Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection and final admission.


Second Year German Program, University of Potsdam

  • Class level: sophomore, junior, senior, graduate
  • Language prerequisite: Minimum of three quarters (two semesters) and maximum of five quarters (three semesters) of university-level beginning/intermediate German.
  • If at the time the program starts it will have been a year or more since students last took a course in German, it is recommended that they refresh their proficiency. Students should see their Campus EAP Advisor for details.
  • GPA: 2.5 cumulative GPA at the time of application and maintained through the end of the last term prior to departure. No exceptions.
  • Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection and final admission.

Semester plus Internship Programs

Georg-August University, Göttingen, Fall Semester and Spring Internship

  • Class level: Junior, Senior, Graduate
  • Language prerequisite (requires one of the following):
    • Two years of university-level German
    • Three to five quarters (two to three semesters) plus completion of the Second Year German Program (see page 9 in this brochure)
    • Three to five quarters (two to three semesters) plus enrollment in the five-week summer pre-ILP in Göttingen
    • If at the time the program starts it will have been a year or more since students last took a course in German, it is recommended that they refresh their proficiency. Students should see their Campus EAP Advisor for details.
  • GPA: 3.0 cumulative and 3.0 language GPA by the end of the last term prior to departure (or earlier if required by campus). Students below a 3.0 must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application.
  • Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection and final admission for EAP.

University of Potsdam Spring Semester with Fall Internship

  • Class level: sophomore, junior, senior, graduate
  • Language prerequisite: Three quarters (two semesters) of beginning university-level German to five quarters (three semesters) of intermediate university-level German.
  • If at the time the program starts it will have been a year or more since students last took a course in German, it is recommended that they refresh their proficiency. Students should see their Campus EAP Advisor for details.
  • GPA: 3.0 cumulative and 3.0 language GPA by the end of the last term prior to departure (or earlier if required by the Campus EAP Office). Students below a 3.0 must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application.
  • Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection and final admission.

Semester Programs in English in Berlin

Berlin European Studies (BEST) at Free University

  • Class level: sophomore, junior, senior
  • Language prerequisite: Zero to a maximum of 5 quarters (3 semesters) of university-level German. Students may be required to repeat course work in German while on the program, depending on the language level at which they test, upon arrival in Berlin.
  • GPA: 3.0 cumulative by the end of the last term prior to departure (or earlier if required by the Campus EAP Office). Students below a 3.0 must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application.
  • Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection. The final admission decision is made by the host institution.
