Hong Kong: Student Activities

Get involved!

Participating in extracurricular cultural and social activities while on EAP is an excellent way to meet people, improve your language skills, and integrate more fully into the community.

Join clubs, sports, musical, theater, or arts groups; volunteer at local organizations, attend lectures and receptions held in academic and community circles, and get the most out of your time abroad!

Cultural Activities

You are encouraged to participate in cultural activities while in Hong Kong. EAP subsidizes a percentage of the cost for visits to museums, monuments, performances, theater, and musical events, and tours. Study Center staff has information on cultural and social events, and will arrange various excursions.

Hong Kong hosts many annual cultural events such as the Hong Kong Arts Festival and the Hong Kong International Film Festival, which provide rich artistic experiences for EAP students who attend.

Both university-based and Hong Kong civic organizations sponsor cultural and educational programs. At CUHK, IASP arranges excursions and special events to introduce students to different aspects of Hong Kong and Chinese culture, such as demonstrations of traditional Chinese opera and music, movie nights, the Teaching-in-China Programmes, and field trips to the Trade Development Council Business InfoCentre, and Lee Kum Kee Co. Ltd.

Student organizations at HKU and HKUST provide EAP students with a wide variety of ways to interact with their student body and to reach out to the local community in general.

Beware! The city’s modern face provides many opportunities to proceed along the familiar Western path that others have paved. You will need to consciously resist the temptation of the familiar that can obscure the city’s cultural richness. This may mean speaking Cantonese even in situations where English is acceptable, or willfully spending less time with American friends, or asking a Chinese friend for information about Chinese festivals or local celebrations in the city or villages. The longer you stay, the more Chinese the city will appear, but you must actively seek out the Chinese culture.
