Israel: Fall Semester, Spring Semester, Academic year(Below is the 2002-2003 program summary. Programs in Israel have been on hold since 2002.) Host Institution: Arava Institute for Environmental Studies (AIES) Highlights: AIES is located on Kibbutz Ketura, an agricultural settlement situated in the scenic Arava desert close to both the Jordanian and Egyptian borders. It is a major center for conservation and environmental protection activities in this delicate desert region. Projects at Arava focus on issues surrounding desertification, water conservation, wastewater treatment and reuse in agriculture, and marine environment preservation. Each term EAP students undertake a semester-long independent research or internship project and produce a substantive research paper. Students and faculty take several field trips within the region to gain first hand knowledge of current concerns in conservation, environmental protection, field study, and natural history, and to learn about possible solutions.
