Study in Italy

EAP students have the opportunity to study in Italy at virtually any time of the year, with or without previous familiarity with the language. Students with no prior knowledge of Italian can begin to learn the language and experience Italian culture in any term through EAP’s language and culture program in Siena, or the UC Center, Rome program. Students majoring in business or economics may take all courses in English at the University of Commerce Luigi Bocconi in Milan.

Those who have a background in Italian language may study in their major at one of EAP’s semester- or year-long immersion programs, offered at some of the country’s most prestigious universities, including the universities of Bologna, Padova, and the University of Commerce Luigi Bocconi in Milan.

Language Preparation for Immersion Programs

Students who do not have the two years of Italian required for participation in the immersion programs may qualify by pursuing one of the following options:

  1. Students with only one year of Italian may meet the required language prerequisites by enrolling in the summer pre-ILP (not available for spring semester programs). Students also may be required to attend the pre-ILP if the EAP Selection Committee feels the student’s language preparation is inadequate.
  2. Students with only one year of Italian and a declared major in the appropriate field may enroll in the Siena fall or spring semester language and culture program, then extend to the following term at an EAP immersion host university for which they are qualified.
  3. Students at University of Commerce Luigi Bocconi may opt to take all of their courses in English, whether or not they have background in Italian. If they intend to take courses taught in Italian, they must have the requisite two years of Italian language, or one year in addition to the pre-ILP.

If at the time the program starts it will have been a year or more since students last took a course in Italian, it is recommended that they refresh their proficiency. Students should contact their Campus EAP Advisor for details.
