Japan: Course Information

General Academic Programs

Use the following resources to learn about EAP courses:

  • Subject Areas (PDF) to see general availability of areas of study.
  • Course Finder to search for courses previously taken by UC students.
    Additional courses may be available at host universities or program locations and not all courses may still be offered. Since courses in new programs have not yet been taken for credit, they may not appear in Course Finder.
  • Host university web sites to search online catalogs or course listings.
  • EAP Student's Guide to find further details in the Academic Information section.

Special Curriculum Programs

The following programs have predetermined curricula designed for UC students.

Intensive Japanese Language and Culture Program, Tsuru University

All students are required to take:

  • Two intensive language courses (5.0 quarter units each)
  • Three additional language courses (2.0 or 2.5 quarter units each)
  • Three core courses in Japanese studies (2.0 or 2.5 quarter units each)
  • Two electives (2.0 or 2.5 quarter units each)
  • Course descriptions: Only a few of the courses listed in Course Finder are offered each year.

Global Studies Program, Meiji Gakuin University

  • A minimum of 21 UC quarter units in the Global Studies curriculum is required of all students. The number of courses required depends on the number of units of each course; courses are 3.0 or 6.0 units each.
  • The integrative Seminar is required of all students (AS ST/ECON/POL S 101, Seminar in Global Security and Development, 3.0 quarter units).
  • Additional courses (minimum 18 quarter units) are chosen from those offered by the Program in the particular semester, for a total of at least 21 quarter units.
  • Courses taken at the Shirokana campus are in addition to the required minimum of 21 units in the Global Studies curriculum.
  • Course descriptions: Only a few of the courses listed in Course Finder are offered each year.

ICU-UC Contemporary Japanese Culture Program, International Christian University

  • The expected minimum unit load is 15.5 UC quarter units; to earn a semester’s credit, UC Berkeley students will take a minimum of 19.5 quarter units.
  • The core course is required; it is planned for 7.5 UC quarter units.
  • One or two additional courses chosen from the curriculum for the program (4 quarter units each) or and intensive language course (12 quarter units).
  • Students with less than one quarter of university-level Japanese language are required to take an introductory Japanese language course during the fall term. Students with more than one quarter of Japanese are not required to take language instruction.
