Korea: Beyond the Classroom

Independent Study and Internships

Independent study, including internships, may be arranged in certain fields. Students who are interested in independent study for the first semester should prepare a proposal either before departure or shortly after arrival at the Study Center. The EAP Liaison Officer will determine the feasibility of the plan and its conformity with Universitywide Office of EAP standards for independent course work.

An internship is an EAP Special Study Project that is taken for academic credit and generally not for income. Internships for qualified students may be arranged by the EAP Study Center Coordinator with Korean and international firms and organizations. Preference is given to students who are in the year-long program. Most sponsoring organizations require interns to have Korean and English fluency. There are opportunities through the California Office of Trade and Investment in Seoul; Bizcomm, a company that promotes imported products; and the Woman’s Development Institute, Korea’s largest women’s “think tank.” For more information, see the EAP Study Center Coordinator immediately upon arrival. In previous years EAP students have interned at such organizations as the Partners for the Future Foundation of the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea, and Edelman Korea, the world’s largest independent public relations firm. Some ambitious students have researched internship opportunities on their own and found positions in such world-renowned firms as Price Waterhouse Coopers and Deloitte Consulting.

Another option for an internship is the Yonsei Global Business Internship that is offered from mid-May to mid-June. Summer program participants may apply and, if selected, will earn one Yonsei credit on a P/NP basis. The deadline for application is mid-April. For the application and more information, see the Yonsei DIEE website under “summer” and then “internship.”

Internship positions vary from year to year, but opportunities normally are available to qualified and enthusiastic students. Seriousness of purpose and a strong sense of responsibility are the key factors in obtaining an internship.
