Korea: Student Comments
“The world is the greatest novel and the one who stays home reads only one chapter-so, get out there! Explore, enjoy, and enlighten yourself.” —Sophia An, UC Irvine “Realizing there is a different world outside California was an enlightening experience. Knowing and realizing are two different ways of thinking. Environment, attitude, and ways of thinking are totally different. Korea is a great place to experience differences and change-real change.” —EAP Student “Going on EAP allowed me the opportunity to use the language of the Korean society to engage in social interaction with the local people.” —EAP Student “My writing improved tremendously. The classes available were very satisfactory. The faculty had high demands of students' work, but they also had strong contact and participation with the students. I was also able to work on overcoming shyness and the language/culture barrier.” —EAP Student “I've gained more self-confidence and self-respect as a result of my accomplishment of studying abroad in a developing country.” —EAP Student “I no longer believe the U.S. is the only country in the world. I am more aware of other countries' politics and events, and I try to find out what's going on internationally, not just domestically. Of course, now news of Korea is of special interest to me.” —EAP Student “I'm really glad I came to Korea on EAP. I learned so much about the language, the culture, my identity, etc. I think it's an excellent program and opportunity for students with an interest in Korea. The staff tries really hard to accommodate everyone. I consider Korea one of the best times of my life and a valuable experience that helped shape my character.” —EAP Student “I'm currently living in South Korea and I'm staying here on the year program. I've only been here for about half of my stay and I can honestly say that I've learned more in these last few months than during my whole stay in Irvine. It is an entirely different feeling to have to construct a different cultural foundation as you experience new sights, sounds, smells, feelings, friendships, etc., while you are living in a foreign country. Of course there are the initial, and for some people prolonged and sporadic waves of culture shock. But perhaps even the moments of frustration, homesickness, and longing can serve as reminders that the only reason students are feeling melancholy is because they are adapting to a wholly alien way of living.” —EAP Student, UC Irvine “My experience in Korea was wonderful, fun, and valuable. I learned so much about a culture that I lost touch with. I understand and appreciate my family's culture more, and I can now speak some of the language that my family speaks.” —EAP Student “Studying abroad in Korea has been a monumental experience and essential to achieving my academic and personal goals. It gave me the chance to learn some of the time-honored traditions of an ancient culture while living in a place that is a forerunner in a growing global community. Not only have I experienced public education in California, but now I've experienced scholarship on a truly international level. EAP in Korea was a great choice because of the variety of classes from which I could choose, ranging from tae kwon do and gumdo (Korean swordsmanship) to the sociology of Korean-Americans and international business management. EAP Korea opened my eyes to a whole new world of academia that transcends the classroom and meets the real world. I would highly recommend studying abroad in Asia/Korea to anyone willing to see the world from a dramatically different perspective. ” —Daniel Choi, UC Berkeley “My favorite memory was when I took the Korean traditional dance class for the weekly summer activity and performed at the Summer Commencement Ceremony. My class had not planned on performing, but on the day of the ceremony we were asked to. It was so spontaneous! I enjoyed myself and it definitely felt liberating to be on the stage again.” —Gina Lee, UC Davis “I lived in Seoul, a huge metropolitan area, for a year. Most of my memorable moments are from trips to the surrounding countryside.” —Hannah Lim, UC Irvine
