Mexico: Beyond the Classroom

In the belief that experiential opportunities can greatly enhance classroom work, EAP offers a variety of internship and field work opportunities in Mexico. Options in Mexico City abound in many disciplines.

UNAM

Independent study is possible in most disciplines. You should consult with the Study Center Director early in the program to determine opportunities in your selected field of study. Recognize the effort required to plan your project or internship and remain flexible.

UNAM is an important center for all varieties of scholarly research and offers many courses that could lead to additional research opportunities. Students prepared to undertake their own independent projects can continue their studies in Mexico on the EAP Field Research Program and work with a Mexican specialist in one of several locations around the country.

Field Research Program (FRP)

Extensive field work opportunities are available through EAP's Field Research Program. The curriculum consists of a six-week training course in Mexico City followed by field research at one of many sites throughout the country.

FRP students may consider doing an unpaid internship in lieu of field work to conduct their independent research. At the beginning of the program, interested students petition to apply for an internship. The Study Center Director works with the student in an attempt to arrange the internship; selection is not guaranteed. As with field work, students who participate on internships must present a substantial paper and an oral presentation at the conclusion of the program. Students earn 9.0 UC quarter units for the internship course.

Tec de Monterrey (canceled after 2007-08)

Internship opportunities are generally available for students in banks; cultural institutions; international, national and local business offices; government offices; Chambers of Commerce for Canada, Texas, and the United States; and community service organizations. Placements are individually arranged based on your area of interest, language ability, and preparation in the field. Interns also develop personal relationships with local people and accelerate the improvement of their Spanish-speaking skills.

You must indicate your interest in an internship on the initial Tec de Monterrey application. Internship arrangements are finalized in consultation with the EAP Study Center Director in Mexico City according to policies outlined in the “Independent Study” section of the EAP General Information Guide.

Tec also administers a Volunteer Social Work Program that enables participants to learn about other parts of the Monterrey community. This is a serious program and requires a 100-hour commitment. EAP students willing to offer so much time collaborate with human rights organizations, assist in shelters or hospitals, or participate in other institutions that serve Monterrey’s least fortunate citizens. Interest in this program should also be indicated at the time of the initial Tec de Monterrey application.
