Mexico: Mexico–US Comparative Perspectives Program, EAP Study Center, Mexico City

Highlights

This program is ideal for juniors and seniors of all disciplines who are interested in the connections between Mexico, California, and the US. Classes are taught by Mexican specialists who are dedicated to intellectual and cultural exchange between Mexico and California and interested in questions of national and cultural identity. Program courses take advantage of the political and cultural richness of Mexico City to enhance the classroom experience. An academic excursion to Oaxaca and Chiapas provides additional perspectives on political, economic, and cultural questions. (details)

Duration

Fall semester: mid-July to mid-December (calendar)

Students may extend their EAP participation to the spring option at the National Autonomous University of Mexico or to the spring Field Research Program, provided that they have the requisite GPA at the time of their departure from California.

Academic Focus

Contrasting views of issues critical to Mexico and the US are explored in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.

Students choose four courses from:

  • History and Culture of Migration
  • Mexico-US Economic Relations
  • Cities in Transition: Mexico City and Los Angeles
  • Mexican Muralism and its Cultural Interrelation with the United States
  • Mexican Culture Across Borders: Film, Music, Literature

Students attend classes with UC students.

Language of Instruction

Spanish

Language Study

The program begins with a four-week intensive language program (ILP).

Units

Students are required to take a full-time course of study while abroad.

ILP: 4 to 8 UC quarter units
Term: Students take 24 UC upper-division quarter units (four courses)

Housing

Students may arrange their own housing, or they may choose pre-arranged housing in apartments or private homes for the first month of the program, and then find their own housing after the ILP if they want to move. Students live with international students, UC students, or host country students. (details)
