Russia: Advanced Russian Program, International University, Moscow

Highlights

The advanced program is designed for students who have at least two years of university-level Russian. Students in this program are immersed in the Russian culture. The program provides an avenue for the advanced student to perfect his or her language abilities and to gain fluency. All advanced students take a course in advanced Russian grammar. Substantive courses in Russian history, politics, literature, and film are taught in Russian by leading intellectual scholars in Moscow. (details)

Duration

Fall semester: early August to mid-December (calendar)

Due to the Russian visa application process, students should not plan any international travels prior to the start of the program.

Academic Focus

Students take an advanced Russian grammar course in addition to elective courses in history/politics, film, and literature. Students with fluency in Russian may be permitted to take courses from International University’s regular offerings with local students; otherwise students attend classes with UC students only. Language study

Program begins with a four-week Russian language and culture course (ILP). Russian language study continues throughout the term. All language courses must be taken for a letter grade.

Units

Students are required to take a full-time course of study while abroad.

  • ILP: 3 to 8 UC quarter units
  • Term: 18 to 21 UC quarter units

Housing

A special feature of the Russia programs is the homestay. Students will be placed in apartments with host country families. Homestays are the best way to meet Russians, learn about their culture and daily life, and practice speaking Russian. (details)
