Russia: Student Comments

“People always consider safety first and foremost while traveling and especially studying abroad. Although recent events may have altered people's perception of safety for Americans in Russia, I've never felt like I was in danger in Moscow.”

—Matt Dreher

“Moscow is a place you've seen on a postcard all your life. When you're finally standing on Red Square in front of St. Basil's Cathedral, the icon of Russia and one of the most photographed landmarks in the world, the experience is utterly surreal! You'll never see a place quite like Moscow or encounter a people as intriguing as the Muscovites. History and culture are literally oozing out into the streets. I was extremely impressed by the caliber of International University's faculty. They have much experience teaching American and other foreign students, and it is clear that, over the years, they have honed their craft to inspire, enlighten, and enliven. The classroom experience at IUM was truly unique-one of mutual intellectual and cultural exchange in which both teacher and student learn from one another. ”

—Marc Engberg, UC Berkeley
Moscow Advanced Program, 2004-05

“Don't believe what you hear about Moscow. I expected the worst, and was very pleasantly surprised. I like it so much, I want to come back next year.”

—Cynthia Good
Russia Intermediate program, and Russia Advanced program, 1999-2001

“Without hesitation, studying in Moscow is the greatest academic, cultural, and social experience of my life. Developing friendships with students and local Russians is something you cannot get out of any UC Russian class. I enjoy the fact that I found Russia to be incredibly safe, but more importantly, I quickly realized that Moscow is not just a city full of history, theater, and museums. It also hosts a great night life where you can hang out and practice your Russian at a number of fun clubs, bars, and concerts.”

—Andrei Karapetian, UC Los Angeles
Semester, 1999-2000

“Moscow can be a great learning experience for those who are willing to open their eyes and absorb a culture that is largely misunderstood in the West. There is much to be gained from an experience here-intellectually, emotionally, and culturally.”

—Joshua Lieberatore
Semester

“I think this program is ideal for someone who wants to learn about all aspects of Russia-the language, the culture, the history, the literature. I decided to go on this program because it is becoming increasingly difficult to get upper-division Russian language and literature courses at my university in California; in one semester here I am taking more courses than I could get in a year at Riverside. The instructors are dedicated and the courses are challenging.”

—Yelizaveta Renfro, UC Riverside
Russia Advanced program

“The EAP experience in Russia has been a real life-changing experience for me. I have learned more about Russian life and culture than I could have ever learned from a textbook.”

—Kelly Rozek, UC Irvine
1999-2000
