Host InstitutionUniversity of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban HighlightsThe Durban, Howard College campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) is located about ten minutes by taxi from a shoreline of fine beaches and has a commanding view of Durban, an area that serves as a center for seaside tourism, industry, and commerce. Durban’s some three million inhabitants comprise several ethnic and racial groups, including a large Indian community that retains many characteristics of traditional Indian culture. The focus of the Durban campus is the humanities and social sciences, science, engineering, management, and architecture. (details) Duration Spring semester: early February to late June Spring semester students are encouraged to apply for extension to the year program. Academic FocusFull curriculum of courses in the humanities and social sciences, science, engineering, architecture, and music. UKZN, Durban has exceptional programs in ethnomusicology, jazz, and dance; gender studies; urban and regional planning; development studies; and a marine science program focusing on the Indian Ocean and Antarctic Rim, and on wetland and estuary ecology and management. Language of InstructionEnglish UnitsStudents are required to take a full-time course of study while abroad; 21 UC quarter units per semester are required, which is usually three or four courses.
