Host InstitutionUniversity of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg HighlightsClose to numerous game preserves and to the dramatic Drakensberg Mountains, Pietermaritzburg is about one hour by car from the Indian Ocean and Durban. It is distinguished by its pleasant small-city atmosphere, Victorian and Edwardian architecture, and lovely forested hills and valleys. Particularly attractive opportunities are available in African studies, South African topics, and media studies. (details) Duration Spring semester: late January to late June Spring semester students are encouraged to apply for extension to the year program. Academic FocusA full range of courses in the arts and humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, especially African studies, Zulu language and culture, political science and history, and rural sociology; the fine arts, including studio art; dramatic art; environmental sciences, botany, zoology, and other disciplines related to environmental, wildlife, and agricultural sciences; communication and media; and philosophy, ethics studies, and religion. Language of InstructionEnglish UnitsStudents are required to take a full-time course of study while abroad; 21 UC quarter units per semester are required, which is usually three or four courses.
